Cameron Fraser McDonald

Cameron will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Vivian; his beloved children, Emma and Jacob; his brothers, Ross (Carrie) and Bruce; and his parents, Edward and Marnie Armstrong. Cameron will also be missed by his uncle, Robert Fraser; his aunt, Jean Fraser; nephew and niece, as well as a loving and supportive extended family.

Cameron was born in Edmonton on September 6, 1961. He grew up in West Edmonton and delighted in exploring the river valley with his friends and brothers, often treating his grandparents' house as a second home. An active and funny kid, Cameron loved swimming, playing street hockey, and football. He developed a passion for music at an early age, playing piano and collecting records throughout his youth. He studied philosophy at the University of Alberta and continued his education in Quebec. Upon returning to Edmonton, Cameron found his life calling in the social services sector. He worked at the George Spady Centre and later the YMCA. This experience catapulted his successful and meaningful career, eventually becoming the Executive Director of Right At Home Housing Society.

In his work, Cameron had the ability to see potential in opportunities to not just build affordable housing but to ensure that housing became an asset to making a community better. He is described by many as being visionary. His willingness and ability to partner with other groups to make affordable housing a reality is unrivaled in the non-profit sector. Through his partnerships and advocacy, he strove to support New Canadians and Indigenous communities. He was on the NiGiNan Housing Ventures board of directors.

Above all, Cameron will be remembered for his kind spirit and gentle demeanor. He succeeded at being a devoted husband and father. He was fulfilled by quiet contemplation, being in nature, and spending time with his family. Cameron also enjoyed swimming, jogging, and playing chess. He cooked deluxe French toast for his family on the weekends. He frequently read and conversed about philosophy, especially the works of Plato, Rousseau, and Kierkegaard. He had an eclectic taste in music and played his piano religiously, perfecting many pieces by Brahms and Schubert throughout his life.

Cameron’s family wishes to express their gratitude to the many people who supported them and the healthcare professionals that helped and guided them along their journey over the past eleven months.

A celebration of Cameron's life will be held on July 17, 2024, from 2-4 pm at Santa Maria Goretti Centre at 11050 90 St NW, Edmonton.
