She was born in Athens, Alabama to her parents William and Ida Harris. She attended school in a one-room schoolhouse. Her teacher, who lived near by, transported her to school each day in a horse and buggy. After the passing of her father, Dixie and her mother moved to Fremont, Ohio, where she would meet and marry Alfred “Al” Kern, who was a percussion musician during the big band era. In 1935, the couple relocated to California and eventually Bakersfield.
Dixie worked numerous jobs over the years. She often spoke about her time working in the cigar stand and restaurant at the El Tejon Hotel during WWII. She would later retire from Smith’s Bakery after 20 years of employment.
Dixie and Al enjoyed hosting dinner parties and traveling and exploring the United States and the World. Dixie had a passion for gardening and was known in her neighborhood for her beautiful flowers. In her later years, Dixie enjoyed her home, watching birds out her sunroom window while listening to the old classics, with some Patsy Cline mixed in.
Dixie enjoyed life to the fullest and always exhibited class and grace. Her greatest wish was to remain at home as long as possible. She was able to live in her home up until the final two weeks of her life at which time she succumbed to renal failure. Heaven has gained an angel.
Dixie is preceded in death by her husband Al in 2000. He was the love of Dixie’s life for 68 years.
Dixie would want to thank her dear friend, Janie, all of her neighbors, Dr. Scott Tangerman DDS, and Lynette (AKA Nita) at Agape In Home Care.
