Mary Ann Curry (nee Downey) was born in Guymon, Oklahoma on January 12, 1927. She lived much of her life in Oklahoma and graduated from the University of Oklahoma, with her master's degree. Mary Ann became an English teacher, which she loved, and she continued her career when she moved to Bakersfield, California in 1962. In all, Mary Ann was a teacher for 36 years wherein she formed lifelong friendships and touched the lives of countless students.
Above all else, Mary Ann was a proud and devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and sister. She loved cooking for her family and making recipes that had been in her family for generations. She was an avid reader and took special joy in reading the newspaper and novels. Mary Ann was never without an opinion on politics and enjoyed long discussions on current events. She loved traveling and experiencing the world, but best enjoyed spending quiet time with her family. She loved spending time at the family cabin in Alta Sierra, enjoyed fishing on the Kern River, trips to the beach, and was known for her daily walks. Later in life, Mary Ann enjoyed playing bridge with her many friends and bird-watching.
Mary Ann passed away peacefully on March 15, 2016 in Bakersfield California. She is greatly missed by her daughters Carolyn Ann Crumpley of Las Vegas, NV, and Christy Ann Little of Bakersfield, CA and son-in-law Tom Crumpley of Las Vegas. Also her granddaughters Heather Harris (Las Vegas), Erin Crumpley (Las Vegas), and Emily Little (Bakersfield) and great-grandsons William and Thomas (her "little men").
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, March 30, 11a.m. at The Women's Club of Bakersfield, 2030 18th Street, Bakersfield, CA. Please come and join in the celebration of Mary Ann's life. In accordance with her wishes, her ashes will be returned to Oklahoma with her family.
