Katy van Walsum passed away gently on May 8, 2017 at the age of 88 years. Katy was predeceased by her husband Ewout (Walter) van Walsum and her daughter Sarah. She is fondly remembered by Ruud (Sarah), Nell and Andre, Peter and Kate, Eric and Leanne and by grandchildren Cees, Ewout, Audrey, Gabriel, Justin, Saskia, Thor, Clarice and Morghan.
Born in Holland to an American mother and a Dutch father, Katy always had one foot on each side of the Atlantic. After earning a history degree at Mount Holyoke College, she married Ewout in 1952 and they settled in Montreal. Many enduring friendships were formed with neighbours, fellow skiers, book club members, weavers and The Lakeshore University Women’s Club. She divided her time among many volunteer positions, her children, her weaving and her books. She was also a keen traveller and took any opportunity to explore new corners of the world.
A small gathering in her memory will be held at Maison Funeraire Racine, Robert & Gauthier Beauchamp in Aylmer, Quebec, at 1:00 pm, Thursday, May 11. Her remains, after cremation, will be laid to rest at Camp Sabael on Indian Lake, New York; a place where, more than any other, she felt at home.
Please consider a donation to La Maison Mathieu Froment-Savoie (http://www.mmfs.org), whose staff and volunteers ensured Katy’s last days were as comfortable and serene as possible.
