William Reginald Smyth, a man of many words and of Austin, TX, died peacefully on Saturday, July 23, 2011 at age 90. He was born to William Smyth and Alice Hart Smyth Taylor on October 30, 1920, in Beaumont, TX. Bill was loved and known for his amazing storytelling, mischievous grin, love of knowledge and education, and ability to inspire the hearts and minds of those around him. Bill was a loving husband, father, and grandfather and was deeply cherished by each and every member of his family. He will be remembered by his positive outlook on life, sense of humor and his generosity. He retained a passion for bridge, Objectivism, history and politics until his death.
He worked for many years as a chemical engineer for Exxon in Venezuela until 1961. He worked for the State of Texas in Engineering and Business Information Systems until he retired in 1990, but during that time found his true calling as an instructor of computer science at Austin Community College, from which he retired in his 80’s after more than 25 years. As a great teacher, he received cards and poems of gratitude from students whose paths had been altered by knowing him.
In his final days, Bill’s family gathered at his bed sharing stories of how this man shaped the history of his family. The storyteller was bathed in the stories of his legacy and then peacefully let go.
