William left home at an early age, going to Needville, Texas where he worked on a Ranch. He enlisted in the Army in 1942 at the age of 20. William served in WW II which sent him to Germany, France and Greenland. His specialty was Riflemen. He received an Honorable Discharge in 1945 after leg injury. William received the EAME Campaign Medal with 1 Bronze Star, Good Conduct Medal and World War 2 Victory Medal. He was a member of the American Legion.
William was employed for the City of Austin, Public Works Department. During his 23 1/2 years there, he received many Safety Awards and Safe Driving Awards. He lived in Austin Texas until 2013, when he had a mild stroke. William lived with his Granddaughter Joyce for about a year. He then moved to Conroe, Texas to be with his other Granddaughter, May until God called him home. All the neighbors knew him as Pawpaw and for his collection of newspapers. He liked sitting on the porch and waving to all who passed by. He enjoyed watching his favorite John Wayne Movies and the Texas Longhorn Football Games. He enjoyed his morning coffee and pancakes.
He was preceded in death by his parents and wife, Ella Thurman Pittman the love of his life for 59 years. He had 9 siblings, Katie, Edna, Lorene, Lois, Opal, Bell, Albert, Harvey and Harrison, whom have all gone on before him. William leaves behind nieces and nephews, 9 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren, 40 great great-grandchildren, 12 1/2 great great great-grandchildren
The pallbearers will be Ronny Dunaway, Chuck Dunaway, Gavin Dunaway, Seth Watson, Rodney Bryant and Kenny Pittman.
He will be missed deeply until God calls us home. You go rest on that mountain now. Soon we will be reunited in Heaven forever.
Funeral service will be held at 1:00 PM on Friday March 22, 2019, with Reverend Brett Holley officiating the service. He will be laid to rest by his loving wife, Ella Pittman, at Austin Memorial Park, 2800 Hancock Drive, Austin, Texas immediately after services.
