William Phillip McVay was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa to Jack and Mary McVay. His parents moved to Bakersfield, California when he was one year old. He grew up there and graduated in 1959. He worked for the Kern County Fire Department for three years. He then joined the United States Air Force in January 1962 and was sent to Austin Bergstrom Air Force Base. There he met Emilie Leck the first week of May. They married March 6, 1965 at the base chapel. In 1966, he reenlisted and was sent to Rapid City, South Dakota. He was assigned to the 44th missile wing. In February of 1970, he was honorably discharged and they moved back to Austin, Texas.
Survivors include wife, Emilie; brother-in-law, Sammy Leck (Melanie); neice, Leean and nephew, Dean.
Bill loved to tell jokes, listen to gospel music and go to his church.
A visitation for Bill will be held Saturday, May 28, 2022 from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM at Cook-Walden Funeral Home, 6100 North Lamar Boulevard, Austin, Texas 78752. A funeral service will occur Saturday, May 28, 2022 at 10:00 AM, 6100 North Lamar Boulevard, Austin, Texas 78752. A graveside service will occur Saturday, May 28, 2022 at 1:30 PM at Hillside Cemetery, 900 N. Valley St., Cuero, Texas 77954.
