William Charles Branch

William “Bill” Branch, 72, of Austin, sadly left us on October 7, 2024, to join his Heavenly Father. He is survived by his son, Charles Branch; sister, Diane Branch-Haverin; brother-in-law, Charles Haverin; nieces, Tricia Haverin-Mirabelle and Laura Haverin-Hernandez; stepson, Michael Loden; great-nephews Chase Kelly and Hunter Hernandez, and great-nieces Madelyn Mirabelle and Harper Hernandez.

A native Austinite, Bill was born on September 27, 1952 at the Old Seton Hospital to William Malcolm Branch and Florine Betty Davis-Branch. He and Diane spent their childhood working at the family business, Davis Hardware Store, founded by their grandfather, Charles P. Davis. Bill was a devoted Episcopalian and a charter member and acolyte at St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church, founded by his Godfather, Malcolm P. Riker.

Bill’s education journey took him from Highland Park Elementary to Murchison Junior High, and eventually to McCallum High School for one year before transferring to Holy Cross Catholic High School. He cherished the teachings of the nuns, brothers, and monks who instilled in him both knowledge and compassion.

A gifted musician, Bill was recognized as one of Austin's finest pianists and organists, playing “by ear” since he was just 4 years old. He formed lasting friendships with fellow musicians Jay Podolnick and Eric Johnson, performing at venues such as the Vulcan Gas Company and Armadillo World Headquarters.

After high school, Bill followed in his father’s military footsteps by attending Marion Military Institute in Alabama, where he achieved the rank of First Lieutenant and served as the Brigade Adjutant. After graduating from Marion, he returned to Austin to attend The University of Texas, where he became a proud member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity.

Bill’s adventurous spirit led him to Switzerland, where he attended the American College of Switzerland in Leysin, high above Lake Geneva and the Rhône in the Alps Vaudoise. Elected President of the Student Body, he embraced Swiss culture during his eight years there, becoming fluent in French and mastering the art of traditional Swiss Fondue and Raclette.

Returning to Austin in the late 1970s, Bill joined his family in building Davis HomeCenters, which evolved into Builders Square. He married Valerie Lucile Williams in 1984, and together they raised Charles and Michael, both of whom graduated from The University of Texas—a source of immense pride for Bill.

In the 1980s, Bill co-founded Branch Travel with his mother and sister, creating a beloved family business that later became affiliated with Carlson Wagonlit Travel until its closing in 2005. Bill traveled the world, forging friendships with people from all walks of life. His warmth and ability to connect with others made him a beloved figure in the community.

An incredible father and passionate Longhorns fan, Bill cherished his family, music, and the joy of shared experiences. A private ceremony will be held to honor Bill's life, surrounded by close family and friends. He will be deeply missed but forever remembered for his kindness, laughter, and love.
