He earned BA and BSEE degrees with honors from Rice Institute/University and his Master’s Degree from the University of Kentucky. He met Martha Allen Myrick at Rice, and they married in 1962.
Wayne's IBM career spanned 31 years, as Electrical Engineer, Engineering Manager, Manager of Product Testing and Lab Quality Manager, with two years on Corporate Staff. In 1968, he helped open the IBM Austin Development Lab, which initially developed word processing machines.
After IBM retirement, Wayne taught mathematics for 12 years at Austin Community College, played tennis at The Courtyard and clarinet in the Austin Symphonic Band and the New Horizons Band, and read math and science texts for Learning Ally (formerly Recording for the Blind and Dyslectic). “Amy Day” and “Andrew Day” were devoted to his grandchildren.
A life-long learner, Wayne was a student of world religions and theology. His world travels with Martha always contained a strong educational component. He embodied the principles of Boy Scouting, attaining Eagle rank and serving as Assistant Scout Master for his son’s troop. Recently he was invited to his grandson's den meeting to tell about the old days in Scouting. An avid birder with a “life list” of 662, he and his cousins birded in remote places such as Attu, Alaska.
Wayne is survived by his wife of 50 years, Martha Myrick Rogers, son Brian Rogers, daughter Cynthia Roush and son-in-law Paul Roush, grandchildren Amy and Andrew Roush, all of Austin; sister Nancy Burton of Amarillo, nephew Jim Burton, niece Anne Djebonhol, four great-nephews, and many cousins.
Memorial Services will be conducted at two o’clock in the afternoon on Saturday, the 8th of June 2013, at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, 14311 Wells Port Drive at Wells Branch Drive, Austin, Texas, with reception following.
