Uvaldo Cantu, Jr. (Lefty) age 85, ended his earthly life on August 18, 2021, to celebrate his next adventure in Heaven with Jesus, with his wife, parents & family who have gone before him to prepare a place for him there.
He led an amazing 85 years as a true Austinite, raised in East Austin, grew up with a love of East Austin softball until his 70’s, played with the Austin Aces, Bobcats, 76ers and Oldtimers.
He graduated from Austin High School in 1954. He attended Blinn College in Brenham, TX. He was proud to serve 15 years as part of the Army National Guard.
He was an outstanding Son, Husband, Dad, Grandfather, and Uncle. He was a good friend to many. He was passionate about his Dallas Cowboys and UT Longhorns. He enjoyed listening to Salsa, Tejano and Jazz music, cooking, and spending time with his loved ones. Most of all, he greeted everyone with a handshake, big hug, and radiant smile.
Uvaldo is survived by his children Gary Cantu, Deanna Cantu, Paul Cantu, and Eric Cantu. His grandchildren Rebekah Cantu, Leah Cantu, and Zachary Cantu. Sister, Felipa Cantu Castilla, Sister-in-law, Margaret Mercado and various nieces and nephews.
Uvaldo is proceeded in death by his beloved wife, Carmen Mercado Cantu, parents Uvaldo and Cecilia Cantu, brother Fernando Cantu, Martin Cantu and sister Mary Cantu Adams, Velia Cantu Estrada, Yolanda Cantu Gonzales.
A celebration of life service will be held at Cook-Walden Funeral Home, 6100 North Lamar Blvd, Austin, TX 78752 on 08/23/2021 at 7:00 P.M. Burial will be in at the Santa Maria Cemetery in Pflugerville, TX on Tuesday at 10:00 A.M.
Serving as pallbearers will be Batts Adams III, Batts Adams IV (LB), Lisa Bocanegra, Pete Bocanegra, Linda Heard, and Joseph Mercado.
