Tom was born August 5, 1936 in Washington, Indiana to Ivan Thomas Strange and Ruth Evelyn Woods Strange. Tom grew up in Indianapolis with his two brothers, his mother and stepfather, Melvin Hillis. He graduated from Thomas Carr Howe High School in 1954 and joined the Navy. After completing his tour of duty in the Pacific, he returned to Indianapolis to pursue his education. He attended Butler University in Indianapolis before transferring and graduating from Purdue University with a degree in Engineering. Tom was married and had two children, Jeffrey and Stacey, with his first wife.
After working for several years at Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab in Baltimore, Tom moved to Austin to work at Tracor in 1966. He married Jeannie Barcus in 1968 and they had two daughters, Linda and Mary Ruth. Tom was one of the original founders of Radian, Co. in 1969. After 9 years at Radian, Tom returned to work at Tracor. In 1986 Tom moved the family to St. Mary's County Maryland to work at Tracor there. When the family returned from Maryland to Austin in 1997, Tom retired from Tracor.
Tom loved his family, mathematics, history, the beach, the mountains, wildlife and traveling. Tom and Jeannie took several trips to France and Scotland and loved both countries.
Tom was preceded in death by his father Ivan Strange, his mother and stepfather Ruth and Melvin Hillis, and his youngest brother Richard Strange. He is survived by his wife Jeannie, his brother Paul Strange, and his wife Judy, his half-sister Patty Strange Zorman and her husband Randy, his son Jeffrey Strange, his daughter, Stacey Strange Johnson and her husband Dale, his daughter Linda Strange, his daughter Mary Ruth Strange Howard and her husband Chris. He especially loved and cherished his granddaughters, Vivien Strange Howard and Olivia Jane Howard. He is also survived by his in-laws, Joe and Mary Margaret Wells and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and longtime friends that he loved very much.
Tom will be interred at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio on Friday, June 13 at 11:15 AM. A memorial service will be held at Tarrytown United Methodist Church, 2601 Exposition Blvd, Austin on Monday, June 16 at 11:00 AM. A reception at the church will follow the service. In lieu of flowers memorials can be made to the Austin Animal Center, the Tarrytown UMC Music fund, or a charity of your choice.
