Thomas (Tom) Robert Felger, age 80, passed away December 24, 2024. Tom was born in Hartford City, Indiana on August 24, 1944 to Margaret and Herman Felger. Tom attended a small 2 room school house and attributes his teacher, Mr. Lee with helping him excel in the classroom. After graduating Hartford City High School, Tom was admitted into the United States Naval Academy where he completed his bachelor’s degree and commissioned as an officer in the United States Navy.
Upon graduating the Naval Academy in 1966, Tom qualified and served on both diesel and nuclear submarines from 1966 through 1974. After completing 27yrs of active duty and reserve service in the US Navy, he retired as a Captain.
Tom’s education continued at the University of Texas Law School receiving a Doctor of Jurisprudence in 1977. Directly out of law school, Tom was hired as an intellectual property lawyer for Otis Engineering Corporation. Tom completed his career with Otis Engineering in 1992 as Assistant General Counsel.
From 1992 until his retirement in 2009, Tom was a partner attorney with Baker Botts. His career with Baker Botts included working with oil and gas companies along with technology and device companies. Much of his intellectual property advice and council involved strategizing in the US and numerous other countries.
Among the associations and committees, he served are the American Arbitration Assoc (36 yrs.), Chair of Intellectual Property Advisory Committee, Austin Chapter President of USNA Alumni Assoc.,
Tom and Ruth were married July 15, 1967. Their journey began with “I do’s” in Willard, Ohio and for the next 57 years it was no longer I, but “we”. They loved to travel spending time with family and life-long friends.
Summarizing Tom’s life into a couple hundred words describing his accomplishments does not bring into context the amazing man we all know. Tom was committed to living his life with and as close to Jesus as humanly possible. While Tom could be described as someone with a wonderful sense of humor, he was also compassionate, generous, and deeply caring. He believed relationships were one of the cornerstones of being a faithful Christian.
Tom was preceded in death by his parents Margaret and Herman Felger, step-father, Clyde Morrical and brother, Clifford Morrical. He is survived by the love of his life and wife of 57 years, Ruth; daughter, Michelle Felger; daughter, Lisa Lampman and husband, Robb; granddaughter, Taylor Lockhoof, and 4 grandsons, Shane Lockhoof and his wife, Keara, Cash Lampman, Beckett Lampman and Travis Lampman. He is also survived by his brothers Victor Felger and his wife, Tiffany, Dan Morrical, William Morrical and Richard Morrical.
A Celebration of Tom’s Life will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, January 11, 2025 at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, 3525 Bee Caves Rd. Austin, Tx with Pastor Lauren Dow Wegner officiating. Reception following in the fellowship hall. If desired and in lieu of flowers, the family would ask for memorial contributions be made to Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church benefitting Austin City Lutherans Ministries or the Alzheimer’s Association.
