It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Robert "Bob" Wilson, 84, of Del Valle, Texas, on November 22, 2024. Born on January 19, 1940, Bob was known for his kind and gentle spirit, his love for helping others, and his devotion to his family, community, and congregation. He was a loyal friend, a helping hand, and a servant to all. Bob will be remembered for his infectious smile, quick wit, and unwavering positivity. His presence will be deeply missed by all who knew him and the many people whose lives he touched.
Bob is survived by his wife, Beverly Mae Wilson (married November 29, 1959), his four children, eight grandchildren, and one great-granddaughter. He is preceded in death by his mother, Margaret Pierce Wilson, his father, Herman B. Wilson, and his four sisters, Shirley Dawes, Jeannette Wilson, Linda Cuatt, and Faith Ann Wilson. Bob grew up and attended school in Beacon, New York, but left before graduation to join the local fire department. He worked as an emergency medical technician in the town’s fledgling first-responder program until he enlisted as a non-commissioned officer in the United States Air Force.
For the next twenty-two years, Bob served domestically and abroad, working and training others in his specialty field of Disaster Preparedness. Shortly after joining the military, Bob obtained his GED and began earning college credits from Ohio University, Chapman College, Tacoma Community College, Southwest Texas Junior College, and eventually, his B.A. from Sul Ross State University. Before and after retirement from the Air Force at Laughlin A.F.B, Bob served the citizens of Del Rio, Texas as a proud member of the Volunteer Fire Department and, briefly, as a member of the city council. His knowledge and experience inspired him in the early 1980s to open shop as the “Red Wagon Chimney Sweep,” offering a critical home fire-prevention service not previously available to the town. Bob acquired his teaching certificate in 1985 and taught high school economics, history, and government for the next ten years. In 1995, Bob and Bev purchased a KOA campground in Burkburnett, Texas. Bob soon drifted toward the church, serving as the head pastor for the Methodist churches of Montague, then Alvord, Texas, and working in the prison ministry while earning his Doctorate of Theology. Always the civil servant, Bob also served briefly as the mayor of Alvord, working tirelessly to improve the lives of his congregation and his town.
Dr. Bob’s journey led him to “retire” from the ministry, but the departure was nominal. He participated in or facilitated Bible studies everywhere he lived, and exemplified service to others in all that he did. Bob volunteered his time in food pantries and overnight weather shelters; he found endless reward in preparing and distributing food for strangers as readily as he did for friends and family. One of Bob’s greatest joys was sitting by a smoky grill with friends and neighbors, or standing over a hot stove, sharing stories and laughing, often preparing the perfect Sunday meal for his congregation. After attending and falling in love with the Haynie Chapel United Methodist Church, Bob rejoined the ministry as its pastor.
There, the congregation welcomed Bob and Bev and became an extended family - loved without reservation. Bob loved this congregation and chapel and was loved by everyone there.
One of Bob’s great joys was preparing Sunday breakfast for the congregation at Haynie Chapel with his invaluable dear friend Nufo Perez.
Thanks to all who took part in Bob’s journey; it wouldn’t have been as special without you.
Whether you knew him as pastor, or dad, spouse, teacher, or friend, election Judge, mayor, or Santa Claus, the love he shared with everyone, came from the heart of Jesus. We were all his bummer lambs.
Please join us for a celebration of Bob’s life at 10 am on Saturday, November 30, 2024, at 16309 Greenwood Dr, Del Valle, TX 78617.
