Robert A. Buddy Spears, Jr., age 86, a lifelong resident of Austin died Sunday, June 6, 2004, after a lengthy illness. Buddy was born March 28, 1918, to Robert and Mattie Lee Spears. He served as a Chief Petty Officer with the Navy during WWII, a 14th degree Mason in the Scottish Rite Temple receiving his 50 year award. Buddy retired from the City of Austin where he was a District Fire Chief with 39 years of service. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Opal; daughter, Judi Schuelke; two sisters, Bobbie Lee Darter and Dorothy Spears. He is survived by his son, Robert A. Bob Spears, III and Carol Harris of Nacogdoches; daughter, Linda Hutto and husband Doug of Austin; grandchildren, Lance and B. J. Spears, Sonya and Brandon Schuelke; three great grandchildren; brother, Sam Spears and wife Mildred of Austin; sister, Bobbie Ann Pixley and husband Paul of Canyon Lake; numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, June, 10, 2004, at Wilke-Clay-Fish Funeral Home with Reverend Don Long officiating. Interment will follow at Oakwood Cemetery with full honors from the Austin Fire Department.
