Phyllis Lucille Richards died April 18, 2023. She was preceded in death by her parents, sister and brother, brother in-law, 3 nephews and great niece. She is serviced by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.
Phyllis was born on March 30, 1920 near Flint Michigan and grew up in Toledo, Ohio until her family moved to Chicago in 1937. She earned a BA in Psychology and Masters in education at The University of Chicago and a PHD in Human Development and Family Science from Florida State University. In 1948, she joined the faculty at the University of Texas in Austin and retired in 1987 Professor Emeritus.
Phyllis was among a small group of national leaders who ushered in our era that emphasized best practice for enhancing the multifaceted development of young children at home and at school. She was a visionary leader and researches in the field of early childhood education and development during her professional career and remained actively involved after her retirement. She was a national leader who worked vigorously to help establish the Head Start program (U.S. Office of Economic Opportunity, Washington D.C.) in Texas and neighboring states. She played a leadership role as board member and officer in making the National Association for Education of Young Children the major voice for young children and their families.
Throughout her professional life she served as consultant to numerous local; state and international agencies; held offices in professional organizations; 11service on boards of community agencies and initiated Child Life Specialist Programs at the Austin Children’s Hospital and Scottish Rite Children’s Hospital outside Dallas.
Phyllis was a member of University United Methodist Church, where she helped establish their Early Childhood Center and served on numerous committees.
