Nicholas David Charles Cornwell, age 32, of Austin TX, passed away on July 15, 2023. Nic will always be remembered as a loving father, brother, and son, and will be profoundly missed by his family and friends. Nic’s spirit could brighten a dark night. This spirit allowed him to live life fully and to touch many people in ways that time will truly show.
Born June 14, 1991, in Columbia, MD, Nic attended Grand River Academy, OH, participating in Gifted and Talented programs throughout high school. He later attended Texas Christian University, TX, majoring in International Business.
Time moved differently for Nic. He had his first teeth at three months, walked at eight months, and rode a two-wheeled bicycle at the age of two. As a teenager, Nic taught himself woodworking, welding, and auto repair. The path to the impossible was simply the fodder for his curiosity and never a limit. He owed much of this love of learning to his lifelong friend and second mother, Michelle.
A natural leader and caring big brother, Nic led Zac and Tim everywhere, watching out for and orchestrating adventures throughout their childhood. He was exceptionally proud of his little brothers.
Nic could turn seeds into Sequoias. In 2016, Nic launched his first company - Quick Dry Carpet Cleaning - with a rug shampooer machine bought from Amazon. Together with his top-notch team, this blossomed into Quick Dry Restoration. In just five years, the shampooer in his trunk turned into one of the most successful startups in Austin and included a moving company, a carpet cleaning company, a maid service, water/fire damage mitigation, and home reconstruction. In addition to his business acumen, Nic was a visionary and oversaw the creation and implementation of ground-breaking automation software applicable to his industry. He saw life as a prospect where others only saw challenges.
Nic humbly cared for others in many ways unknown to most - especially those in recovery from addiction, often hiring and mentoring individuals who might not otherwise have been given a chance. He was a major contributor to local charities supporting recovery and a source of positive change for many. He was the rare soul who could create opportunities and then entrust those most in need with the promise of his creation, realizing that words without deeds are meaningless.
His latest career ambition was to go to law school and become an attorney; Nic studied case law voraciously and could cite legal statutes at will. Law school and gifted law professors would have loved Nic. His sharp and probing mind would have found a natural home in the hallowed passages of arcane case law, and he would have welcomed the opportunity to show the professors the error of their counterarguments.
Nic’s passions naturally flowed from his unbridled spirit. Nic loved to travel, visiting Florida, Montana, Italy, England, Columbia, and any place involving a boat. He loved speed, as evidenced by his jet skis, boat, sports cars, and his love of the stock market. These were some of the few places in which the world moved as fast as his mind. He was interested in real estate investments, owning multiple properties in addition to running his businesses.
The love of Nic’s life was his beautiful and brilliant daughter, Kennedy. He called her “Boss Lady”, as she was the only person who could make him (and everyone else) follow orders. He is forever with Kennedy as well as his soon-to-be-born daughter, Soleil, and his partner Roci. The most selfless act Nic ever committed was trusting his newborn son, Charles, to the Spulers, knowing he wasn’t ready to take on parenthood.
Nic never stopped pushing limits - ever curious and learning. He lived life with a passion. He was loved by many. He was a rare gem in our worlds and in our hearts. We thank God for sharing this amazing human being with his family and the world.
Nicholas is survived by Rocio Sierra, his loving partner, his children Charles Spuler, Kennedy, and Soleil, his brothers, Zachary and Timothy, his mother, Penny Lane, his father, David Cornwell, his grandmother, Linda Scharf, grandfather Ronald Dunkleman and in the memories of many close aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Visitation and a vigil service for Nicholas will be from 5-8 pm on Sunday, July 23 at Weed Corley Fish Funeral Home, 5416 Parkcrest Drive in Austin, followed by a funeral service on Monday July 24 at 11:30 am at St. John Neumann Catholic Church, located at 5455 Bee Caves Road, Austin TX. Flowers and/or memorial contributions to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Texas are welcome.
