He was born on December 2, 1942, in Gladewater, Texas and his family moved to Aldine, Texas where he grew up.
Marvin graduated from Aldine High School in Aldine, Texas. He joined the Army in June 1961 and served for three years, and was discharged on July 6, 1964. He went on to attend the University of Houston, part-time for 10 years, where he graduated with an Accounting/Business Degree, BBA.
He was employed by Schwann’s where he delivered ice cream that had been ordered by his retail customers and sold any excess from the delivery truck. He could eat as much as he wanted after he delivered all of his orders! Boy did he love his ice cream! He attended the University of Houston while working full-time at Schwann’s and applying for employment using his Accounting degree. He got his first accounting job shortly after graduation. His latest employment was with Mr. Jerry Reed at Reed Properties and Development 2000 Inc.. a commercial Real Estate/Development firm where he worked for 30+ years until January, 2024 when he fell ill.
He is preceded in death by his Dad, Buster Smith, and his Mom, Bebee Pearl Smith, as well as his grandparents, his best friend & brother-in-law, Michael Reeves and his wife’s parents, Alline Reeves and C.L. Reeves.
He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Donna Reeves Smith of Austin, Texas, and his children, Jason Thomas Smith and wife, Michelle Smith of Georgetown, Texas, his daughter, Julie Smith of Pasadena, Texas and his step-son, Richard Beverly and wife, Lauren, of Austin, Texas. He is survived by his grandchildren, Hayley Creasey, Hannah Creasey, Hunter Creasey, Kameron Carson, Kyle Carson, Reed Beverly, Chase Beverly, Hailey Smith, and Hayden Smith; and his great-granddaughter, Quinn Sheiner. He is also survived by his brother, Hershall Smith, and wife, Charlotte, and his sister, Veeda Burns, and husband, James of Castroville, numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins and many, many friends.
The family would like to thank Cella Bella Hospice, Austin, Texas for the care and compassion they showed our loved one in his final days.
Marvin was a genteel man whose focus was on his children and grandchildren. His favorite sports teams were the Houston Astros, the Houston Texans and the Dallas Cowboys. He and Donna lived their lives devoted to following the athletic accomplishments of their children and grandchildren. Their vacations were spent with their grandchildren, specifically following their grandson, Reed Beverly, and the select baseball families to many venues in Texas (Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, New Braunfels, Tomball, Bastrop, Lubbock and College Station) and to California, Colorado, Florida, Louisiana, Kansas, Oklahoma and South Carolina. In baseball off-time, vacations were spent with their grandsons in Corpus Christi or anywhere the fish were biting. His favoriorite adult vacation destinations were Las Vegas and Louisiana.
Family and friends are invited to attend a visitation with the family, on Wednesday, July 24th, from 5:00 pm -8:00 pm at the Cook Walden/Forest Oaks Funeral Home at 6300 W. William Cannon Dr, Austin, Texas 78749 followed by the funeral on Thursday, July 25th at 10:00 am in the Chapel. Interment will follow at Austin Memorial Park Cemetery at 2800 Hancock Dr, Austin, Texas 78731.
