She is survived by son Mike Dunmire and wife Pat; sister Dorothy Mauel and husband Bob; grandchildren Allie Dunmire and Steven Dunmire; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by Ken Whittington, her beloved companion of 25 years.
Mabel was a lifelong resident of Austin. She graduated from Austin High School and Durham’s Business College, and retired from the Texas State Teachers Association after working many years in the retail clothing business.
As a single Mother working in the 1950’s she was well aware of the inequities of the era, and ahead of her time in supporting equal rights for all.
Her belief in God was strong and she attended and tithed to Congress Avenue Baptist Church.
Mabel enjoyed traveling with friends and family, to include trips to many U.S. cities, and made several trips to Europe after her retirement.
Mabel was a quiet dignified woman of impeccable integrity, a dedicated devoted Mother and fierce defender of her family, and always a lady. She was a stickler for good manners and good grammar.
She was loved by all who knew her, and leaves us with many fond memories.
The family extends special thanks and gratitude to the staff at Stonebridge Health Center for Mabel’s tender care.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 PM on Thursday August 16 at Cook-Walden/Forest Oaks, with graveside service to immediately follow.
In lieu of flowers the family requests you consider donations to the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America, the Parkinson’s Foundation, or a charity of your choice.
