Larry Lloyd West, age 74 of San Marcos, Texas passed away due to natural causes on June 7, 2017 in Austin, Texas. Born June 29, 1942 To his Father John Lloyd (Shorty) West and Mother Mary Ruth (Francis) West. He was raised on the family farm in Briscoe County Texas and attended school in Silverton, Texas where he graduated High School and then attended Lubbock Christian College, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in Psychology. While attending college he met and fell in love with Barbara Inez Pervier the daughter of Charles and Mary (Case) Pervier and they were married on August 11, 1962.
Larry worked in the communications industry for Southwestern Bell Telephone as a communications engineer and was part of a team that developed the technology to convert spoken word over copper wire and transmit it over the air in real time that allowed President Nixon to speak to astronauts Neil Armstrong and Edwin “Buzz” Armstrong in space for the first time on July 20, 1969. Larry worked for Southwestern Bell for 38 years retiring in 2000. During his time with the telephone company he served as a communications consultant to Bell Labs and two White House Administrations.
Larry was an avid outdoorsman that enjoyed hunting and fishing and enjoyed playing and watching baseball, football and golf. He and his wife Barbara are members at the San Marcos Church of Christ in San Marcos, Texas and he was a devout Christian man with a strong faith in his Lord.
He is survived by his sister Mary Jane (West) Patton and her husband J.E. Patton of Silverton, Texas; His beloved wife of 54 years, Barbara Inez (Pervier) West; Their children Dan West; Charles and Amy (Maiden Name) West; Richard and Silke (Newman) West; Kerri (West) and Will Kennemer; Adopted daughter Sharon (King); His Grandchildren, Christian, John, Louis, Katie, Charles, Jr., Dylan, Savannah, Bailey, Skyler, Mary, West, Case and Carter and numerous nephews, nieces and cousins. He is preceded in death by his parents John and Mary Ruth (Francis) West and his son John Lawrence West.
A celebration of life will be held at 3:00 PM June 29, 2017 at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3413 in San Marcos, Texas where he volunteered and cooked breakfast at every Friday for disabled war veterans.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to your favorite charity. Larry and Barbara’s wishes are that their remains be cremated and their ashes combined and spread on the beach in Rockport, Texas where they spent most of their summer vacations and weekend getaways.
