John Carl Scurlock, age 82, passed peacefully into the arms of his Savior on Friday, July 17, 2015 after a courageous battle with cancer. John grew up in Dallas, attended Highland Park schools and graduated from Southern Methodist University. Upon graduation, he married Jan Lowry Simpson, the love of his life for the past 61 years. He proudly served in the United States Air Force as a pilot until he received his honorable discharge. After his military service, he joined The First National Bank in Dallas, where his father had spent his career, and there John met numerous Texas bankers in his capacity as a correspondent banker, many of whom became lifelong friends. In 1963, he took advantage of an opportunity with a small downtown Austin bank, City National, where he spent the next 30 years, ultimately becoming Chairman and CEO.
John was known for his commitment to the Austin community, and was active in a variety of volunteer and civic activities throughout his career and into retirement. His Board and leadership positions included but certainly are not limited to: Coach and President at Northwest Little League; various capacities with Goodwill Industries; Chairman of Austin Adopt-a-School, and instituted "Earning by Learning" in Austin ISD; the Admiral's Club; Chairman of Faith in Action West Austin Caregivers (now Drive a Senior – West Austin); various capacities with the Palmer Drug Abuse Program; a loyal volunteer with "The Gathering", a program committed to caring for those suffering from Alzheimer's and other memory issues; and a variety of others.
Among the numerous awards and honors received were: the Willie Kocurek Vital Aging Award; the Austin Business Journal Community Service Award; and, the first recipient of the John C. Scurlock Volunteer of the Year Award honoring him for his involvement and commitment to Drive a Senior – West Austin.
He was additionally a man of faith, and a member of Covenant Presbyterian Church.
He loved his family, his professional colleagues, many friends, his (and all) dogs, motorcycles, hunting, fishing and the occasional golf game.
John is survived by his wife Jan; his three sons - Stephen (and wife Becky) of Austin; David of San Antonio; and John, Jr. (Anna Serratt) of Austin; six grandchildren - Matthew Scurlock (and wife McKensey) of Dallas, Michael Scurlock (and wife Whitney) of Carbondale, Colorado, Ryan Fowler (and husband Daniel) of Bastrop, David Scurlock, Jr.(and wife Cassidie) of Stephenville, John III (Trace) of Austin, and Haley of Austin; and four great grandsons with two more pending.
A memorial celebration will be held at Covenant Presbyterian Church, 3003 Northland Dr. in Austin on Monday, July 27 at 10:30 AM.
