John Pollard Guinn Jr, 97, passed away peacefully Nov 27, 2014. Born and raised in Cotulla, TX, he met and married his wife while teaching school there. His marriage to Velma Lee Sanders, his "only sweetheart" would last for 70 years until her passing. A veteran of WWII, John served as an Army Intelligence Officer attached to the "Mighty Eighth Air Force". Returning to Texas, John resumed his education at the University of Texas in Austin, eventually earning a Ph.D. His Dissertation published in book form as Shelley's Political Thought by John Pollard Guinn, published by Mouton 1969, Lib Con Cat #69-17881. A long career ensued teaching in the English Department at Texas A&M.
John had a lifelong love of classical music and, along with Velma Lee, was a long time supporter of Ballet Austin. A close second devotion for both of them was driving the hill country looking for wildflowers, followed by watching the birds in his yard along with his cat, Thomas.
John is survived by his son John Pollard Guinn III, daughter Elizabeth Anne Haynes, and four grandchildren, Christopher Paul Haynes, Mary Margaret Haynes, Caroline Noel Haynes, and John Patrick Haynes.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, Dec 02 from 5pm - 7pm at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home, 3125 North Lamar. A graveside service is scheduled for Wednesday, Dec 03 at 10:00am at Austin Memorial Park, 2800 Hancock Drive.
Donations in lieu of flowers are requested and may be made to Ballet Austin and Austin Hospice in the name of John P Guinn Jr.
