Joanne (Jody) Pittenger Garrett went to be with the Lord on August 17, 2006. Jody was born in Canton, Ohio, on December 1, 1918 to Chester Burt and Marie Miller Pittenger. She spent her childhood in Ohio and moved to Austin in high school. A graduate of the University of Texas and member and national officer of Alpha Chi Omega, Jody was for 25 years editor and publisher of the Texas School Business Magazine. She and her husband were active members for many years of Tarrytown Baptist Church, where he was a deacon, member of the choir, and Sunday school teacher; the East Texas Christian Ashram; and various Bible Study groups. They also were founders of Educators for Christ. After retirement, they traveled extensively until Jody had a stroke in 1989 that limited her activity considerably. She had a zest for life and was known for her outgoing personality, sense of humor, and quick wit. She is predeceased by her parents; her son, Jeffrey Buck Garrett; and her brother, Bill Pittenger and his wife. She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Robert Garrett; her daughter, June Tumey and husband Carl; daughter, Betty Lee Borden and husband Gordon; son, Pitt Garrett and wife Vickie; as well as 12 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. The family gives special thanks to her niece Martha Boswell and friends Veda and Hollis Boehme for their care and assistance the last years of her life. Funeral service will be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday, August 19, at Tarrytown Baptist Church (The Sanctuary), 2600 Exposition Blvd. Burial will be private in Dallas on Monday, August 21, 2006.
