Jessie Butler Smith Turner, 89, of Austin, TX died following a lengthy illness on Saturday, November 16, 2019. Our Mom was born August 29, 1930 to Jesse Smith and Margaret Butler in Sumner, Mississippi. She graduated from Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, TX where she met our Pops, Hiram Glynn Turner. They were married in 1951 and remained devoted to each other for 63 years until his passing in 2014. While serving in the United States Air Force, they lived all over the United States and Japan. They moved to Huntsville, TX in 1974 upon retirement. In 1996, they moved to Austin to be closer to family.
Mrs. Turner is survived by daughter, Julie Turner Pike and husband Chris; daughter, Susie Turner; son, Mike Turner and wife Cheryl; granddaughter, Kristen Turner Pope and husband Brian and grandson, Scott Turner.
Mom loved her family, her plants, cooking and recipes, old westerns, sewing and traveling with Pops in the motorhome. She loved cheering for the Texas Longhorns and the San Antonio Spurs. There were many adventures as the family traveled the country and lived on multiple Air Force bases. She ran the Turner household with love. We will miss her immensely. She will return to San Antonio to be buried with her beloved Glynn at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.
The family would like to thank her medical staff and caregivers for respectful and professional care during her illness. We owe a very special debt of gratitude to the wonderful caregivers from Home Care Assistance and Bluebonnet Hospice who cared for Mom at home. Words just aren’t enough to express our heartfelt appreciation.
