Jerry was born on June 1, 1949 in Redfield, South Dakota to parents Delmar and Thora (Gilbertson) Moench, the youngest of 3 boys. They grew up in the Aberdeen, South Dakota area. Jerry graduated from South Dakota School of Mines in Rapid City with a BS degree in Electrical Engineering on May 28, 1971 and immediately went to work for Motorola Semiconductor in Phoenix, Arizona. On August 21, 1971, he married Judy Chauncey whom he met while at School of Mines, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Aberdeen, South Dakota.
Jerry and Judy lived in Tempe, Arizona until 1975 when they moved to Austin, TX after Motorola transferred Jerrys design group there. Jerrys storied employment includes design engineering and manager positions for Motorola, AMD, Lattice, SUN, Centaur, and Oracle Corporations. During Jerry’s semiconductor design engineering career, he was the author and creator of multiple patents, and received 2 Fellow and other technical recognition awards.
Jerry was very active with his sons in Troop 513 Boy Scouts volunteering as treasurer assisting with several campouts and assisting many scouts achieve their merit badges. He coached basketball for boys and girls at Town and Country Optimist Club for multiple years. He also coached and supported many types of sports and activities through his boy’s childhoods. Jerry loved cheering for and is a season ticket holder for the Texas Longhorns, especially football and basketball. Hook ‘em Horns!! Jerry enjoyed golfing with his friends, and was always looking for good deals to buy! He was a founding member of Austin’s St. Thomas More Catholic Church, who recently celebrated their 40th anniversary.
Jerry is survived by his spouse of 47 years, Judy Chauncey Moench; sons, Chris (Audrey) Moench and Ryan (Lauren) Moench; grandson, Cooper Moench and granddaughter, Caroline Moench; Sister-in Laws Ellen Moench and Karen Moench, brothers and sister in law George, Joe and Jenny, their spouses and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Delmar and Thora Moench, and brothers Delmar Jr. and Gerald Moench.
Austin Funeral Services will be held Sunday, November 25, 2018 3:00pm at Cook Walden Chapel of the Hills, 9700 Anderson Mill Road, Austin, TX 78750, followed by a reception. Burial will be held Friday, November 30, 2018 1:00pm at Riverside Cemetery, Aberdeen, South Dakota.
