Jean S. Whitehouse passed away May 10, 2023 in Austin, Texas at home. She was born May 11, 1929 in Pittsburgh PA to Elmer and Florence Stewart. She passed away one day before her 94th birthday. Her husband, Robert Burnham Whitehouse, who she married in 1952 predeceased her in 2004. She is survived by four nephews, L. Albert Whitehouse Jr. (Denver, CO), John Stewart, Robert Stewart, and David Stewart all of Pittsburgh and two nieces - Joyce Whitehouse Donadee (Pittsburgh PA) and Twila Stewart Eddy (Erie, PA). She is also survived by her close friends and neighbors Barclay and Barbara Garner.
Jean was employed until her passing at St. David’s Medical Center in Austin. She was a beloved employee who was named “Employee of the Year” for the entire Hospital a few years ago. She created an environment of fun and a sense of belonging for co-workers, family and friends. New employees at St. David’s would have a personal orientation to the Hospital created by Jean where, according to her coworkers, she became the “heart and soul” of the Hospital. She became friends with many employees of the Hospital which plans a memorial garden in her name. A few hundred employees and former employees attended a Memorial Service at St. David’s which was led by its CEO.
Jean belonged to a Bunco group which met monthly for over 30 years and which became a group of dear friends. She loved to be friends with younger people and provided fun activities for children in the neighborhood and family. She remained an avid Pittsburgh Steelers fan while living in Texas and wore Steeler gear for all to see. For family get togethers she instructed everyone to “wear the family shirt” which meant that they should wear a Steeler shirt.
Jean and her husband, Bob, lived in Pittsburgh, but also lived for 10 years in London, England, and for several years in Bermuda. While in England they connected with Bob’s many English relatives because his parents and brothers emigrated to the US from England. They also enjoyed attending many plays in London’s West End. While in Bermuda Jean loved to drive her moped around the island. Jean liked to get to know the people in her various residences and learn about how they lived. They moved to Austin when Bob retired from Gulf Oil Corporation.
