On October 4, 2022, Dr. James William Green, MD. (Dr. Bill Green), passed away at 80 years young after gallantly fighting dementia and cancer. An avid reader, fisherman, dermatologist, friend, traveler, and dedicated family man, he spent his life practicing dermatology and loving his amazing wife of 60 years, Jeanie Mullins Green.
They met as undergraduates at Tulane University in New Orleans,LA. Having visited all 7 continents together and likely fished them all, he loved adventure and sharing his knowledge and experiences with all who would listen. An outgoing seventh generation Texan who grew up in Eden, Texas, he loved this state and enjoyed being on the ranch. He always looked down while walking, not because he was avoiding people, but because he was always on the hunt for arrowheads and Native American artifacts. He loved nothing more than to spend time with his family; he would stop seeing patients at 3pm so he could see his children participate in sports and whatever else they were doing. Big Papa fostered a love of knowledge and pursuits with his beloved grandchildren. Books... oh my, there weren't many this bibliophile didn't read. And as an English major graduating college at the age of 19 and medical school at 23, he loved to read! He was the winning team at Trivial Pursuit.
Bill practiced dermatology in Austin for 32 years and enjoyed every second. He was a Fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology, member of the Texas Medical Association, and the Travis County Medical Society. He was also a Research Assistant at the University of London Institute of Dermatology at St. John's Hospital of Diseases of the Skin in 1968-69 in London, England before moving back to Texas.
Bill is survived by his wife Jeanie; brother, Ban Green and wife Deborah; sister, Ann Woodall and her husband Jerry; son, Trevor Green and wife Jamie; daughter, Shannon G. Owen; grandchildren, Hunter, Ainsley, and Kendall; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins!
There will be a Celebration of Life at the ranch on Sunday October 9th, from 10am - 2pm. In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that those who are able to donate to your local library or the Travis County Food Bank.
And if you've seen a canoe at the bottom of The Devil's River right after Game Warden falls.... he almost caught the biggest fish, but luckily both got away!!
