I was so sorry to hear the news of Happy's passing last week.  I met and got to know Happy at the Horseshoe Lounge over the last 10 years where he was, indeed, and icon and positive fixture.  I played many a round of shuffleboard with him and enjoyed how he shyly chuckled and always had an open, kind greeting for everyone.  I have not been back to the horseshoe in months and was moved to tears when I was told that Happy is no longer with us.  A lot has changed in the last 15 years or so in Austin, but Happy was one of those personalities that you could consistently count on to brighten you day, and make you smile.  I will miss you so much, Happy.  My dearest condolensces to family and friends.

Jack was a great brother. He was so accepting of everyone.  Growing up together in NC we were moved around a lot.  Jack  always made friends where ever he 
was. After he moved back to the states & settled in Austin we visited he & Iris & he always let you know he loved Austin and couldn't understand why we didn't all move there.  We all looked forward to his trips to VA.  He will be missed.  Heartfelt condoles to Steve, Joan & Jason you are in my prayers.



My best memory of Uncle Jack was on a visit to the UK when Aunt Iris decided to hire a car. Uncle Jack was not keen on driving on the other side of the road. During a visit to Liverpool he ended up driving the wrong way on a one way street. Aunt Iris did chew his ear off :-). Of course he could got come to the UK without his Beef Jerk.  



Dear Williams Family: My heart goes out to all of you now mourning the passing of dear "Hap." I met him one evening at the Horseshoe Lounge when I stopped in to check out an Austin Landmark. Little did I know that I would become a devotee of the shuffleboard and the jukebox there.....and an admirer of "Happy Jack."

I loved listening to all his stories of service during WWII; I hung on every word of the history he knew of The War Between the States and the personal tale of the Civil War ordnance he'd found embedded in a riverbank in Virginia.

He taught me the rules, protocol and tactics of the game of shuffleboard. I'd never played before. I now feel fully confident on entering any tavern, pub or bar across this great nation that has a 'board, that I can 'hold my own.'

Hap schooled me on the light grip, the 'dominant-hand' launch,  how to judge a board, and how much sanding to put on or request.

Hap is the reason that Dave and I met in May 2003. Dave came into the 'Shoe, bought a beer and asked Hap who he could partner up with on the gameboard and Hap directed him to me.

We've been together ever since that night. We've not been to the 'Shoe for years.

I only found out last night (New Years Eve) of dear Haps death. I will light a candle tonight to help illuminate his journey on.

Thank you, dear man, for playing Johnny Horton's "Battle of New Orleans" for me and reminding me of my childhood.

I didn't know him as "Happy Jack", I knew him as my "Uncle Jack". But he was always "happy" and upbeat and that, in part, was why I love my uncle Jack so much. I do know he was a great brother to my mother (Jane); they loved each other very much. And he was always kind and loving to my sisters, I loved him for that. You know uncle Jack loved his mother (Thelma), and I can still hear him callout, "Mama", in that southern drawn that was learned in NC and shaped in his many years in Austin, TX. Uncle Jack loved his little brother, he call him "Billy"; I always thought that was funny when I heard him call out "Billy" in his distinctive draw. And I guess I'll never understand why uncle Jack put ice in his beer; oh, and it had to be Pearl beer! I remember us always going from store to store looking for "Pearl beer" when my uncle Jack came to visit us in Virginia.

I'll miss you Uncle Jack, and tonight, I'll raise a glass of beer (with lots of ice) you! RIP, "Mama" & "Billy" are calling you.



We always enjoyed when Uncle Jack visisted.  He was always happy and joking....bringing a smile to all.   Since, I have made a tradition in my family with "Happy Jack" soup.  I make it for my family with the leftovers in the refrigerator and remind them to be a "Happy Jack".  Happy Jack's memories will be with us forever, but especially when we enjoy Happy Jack soup!

I met "Happy Jack" at Willie's Pool Hall about 1976. We pitched horseshoes, washers, shot pool and swapped stories with Mom & Pop Nelson for a few years while enjoying a cold beverage or two. He would come in tired after carrying his route telling us how many sets of circulars he had to put in every mail box that day. Jack and I are proud Democrats, veterans, and patriots. The rude and unnecessary political remark by Mike Owen should not have been included in Jack's memory. Owen is the reason there are no republicans I like. My sympathies to the family.



Our memories of Uncle Jack will last forever.  His smile and happy go lucky nature will always be remembered.  Mom always looked forward to Uncle Jack visiting and made sure we all were able to visit with him. We especially looked foward to hearing his latest stories and updates on his children and grandchildren.  We will miss you Uncle Jack and our hearts and prayers are with you Stephen, Joan and Jason. I remember the first time I beat Happy at shuffle board.  It only took me five years. He was great american and a good friend.  I can honestly say he was the only democrat I've ever liked.  I will miss you Hap, and your road kill jerky.



Happy Jack will be missed. The Horseshoe will not be the same without him. Thoughts and prayers to his family.

We lost a great part of Austin when Happy Jack passed from our lives. He was a wonderful soul, kind friend and a great shuffleboard player! If he could, he'd tell us to celebrate the life he led rather than feel sorrow for his passing. I will always cherish our times together.

Growing up, Uncle Jack was a distant relative living in Austin with Auntie Iris and Stephen, Joan and Jason.  We rarely saw him so he held a certain mistique...this brother of my mother's, a Air Force vet who had lovely wedding pictures glued into my mothers photo album.  Mom shared loving memories from their childhood with Uncle Jack, growing up in North Carolina - going to the movies on Saturday (all day watching double-feature films), paper routes, collecting bottles along the side of the road, and living the lives of children during the depression.

The last ten years, or so, Uncle Jack visited Virginia at least once a year to visit.  We got to know Uncle Jack and loved to hear news of his grandchildren's successes and talents, tales of Vegas, Charlestown, and the infamous bar he was so fond of down the street.  

My brother had the opportunity to visit this fine establishment when he was in Austin on a business trip and came back to repoort of U. Jack's popularity at the bar.  He relayed that U. Jack's status was much like a "rock-star" (envying this great status).  U. Jack's next trip to Virginia, I remarked that my brother was very impressed on his "rock-star" popularity.  U. Jack very quickly responded, oh no....more like an ICON.  We love you, U. Jack and will miss you.
