Hugh Winfred Brinsdon

Hugh Winfred Brinsdon passed away on Thursday morning, January 11, 2024, surrounded by his loving family at his home in Austin, Texas. He was 97 years old. Hugh was born in Houston, Texas to Hugh Winfred Brinsdon Sr. and Emily Martha Janak on July 25, 1926.

Growing up in Houston, with a brief period in Weimar, Texas, Hugh graduated from St. Thomas High School in 1943. He enlisted in the Navy during World War II, training and serving as an “Aviation Radioman” on a “PBM Mariner” aircraft. Toward the end of the war, he continued in the service briefly as part of the Shore Patrol and later in the Naval Reserve. Upon discharge from the service, he attended St. Mary’s College in California, graduating in 1951. It was in the San Francisco Bay area during that time that he met Irma Mae Younts, who was to become his wife of 72 years.

Hugh and Irma would eventually make a life-long home in Texas, first in Houston and then in nearby Cypress, where they began to raise a family. It was here Hugh began what was to become a 37-year career with Humble/Exxon. He was an integral part of the then-emerging computing department, ultimately becoming a Senior System Analyst.

Among other things, Hugh enjoyed playing cards, fishing, bowling, golfing, following the Houston sports scene, and, of course, cooking bar-b-que for his family and friends on special occasions. He and Irma also did extensive traveling across the country and around the world before and after their retirement. In later years, they migrated once again, this time making their home in Austin where they could be closer to family.

Hugh is preceded in death by his wife Irma, his parents Hugh Sr. and Emily, his sister Mable, and his brother John (wife Elizabeth). He is survived by his son Hugh Warren Brinsdon (wife Deborah) and his daughter Catherine Nottebart (husband Ron). He leaves eight grandchildren: Amy, Beth, Jennifer, Tracy, Tim, Robert, Brian, and Michael, as well as eight great-grandchildren. He also leaves his loving nephew Steven Younts (wife Diana).

A brief service and celebration of Hugh's life will be held at 11:00 AM, February 7, 2024, at Cook-Walden/Forest Oaks Funeral Home (6300 W. William Cannon DR, Austin, TX, 78749).
