Horace Richard Carter

Horace Richard Carter, 86 of Manchaca TX, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on October 13, 2024. The family will be accepting guests for a memorial service on Sunday, November 17, 2024, at 12:00 pm, at Cook Walden Forest Oaks Chapel in Oak Hill. A reception will follow the services.

Richard was born in Fort Worth, TX on October 25, 1937, to Ira E. and Clara K. (Morton) Carter. He grew up in Fort Worth. His father passed away in 1945 and he had to grow up quickly. He met Patricia in 1956 and they married on January 16th, 1958 in Fort Worth TX. They had their only child Chris in 1959.

He went into the Army in 1958 and ended up stationed at Fort Bliss in El Paso, TX. During his military service, he worked in guided missiles and was an armorer. He was honorably discharged in 1964.

The family moved from Fort Worth to Austin in 1967. He did competition shooting in the late 60’s and won many of them. Richard and his son, Chris, would reload ammo during the week and shoot on the weekends. Then in 1972 Richard became a police officer with the Austin Police Department. During his career he worked in patrol, youth services, and missing persons.Richard had a few shift parties at his house during the late 1970’s that always proved interesting. He did his last 8 years with the APD Motors Unit as a Senior Sergeant and retired in 1995. Richard always commented that being on Motors was his favorite years with APD.

After retirement, Richard and Patricia traveled throughout the Southwest enjoying places like Tombstone AZ, New Mexico, and Colorado. He enjoyed shooting, riding motorcycles and spending time with his three grandchildren. He started riding motorcycles at age 14 and continued until he was 80 years old.

He is survived by his only child Christopher C. Carter and wife Zena Marie Carter; and three grandchildren, Carl Carter, Samantha Cragle and her husband Mitchell, Sabrina Carter and one great-grandson, Damian Thompson Carter.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Patricia, and his parents, Ira and Clara Carter.
