Henry Moak Rollins September 11, 1921 January 27, 2005 Henry Moak Rollins was born September 11, 1921 in Gulfport, Mississippi and died January 27, 2005 in Austin, Texas. He was married October 20, 1946 in Houston, Texas to Viola Emogene Broaddus. He is survived by his wife, three sons and their wives Joe and Kim Rollins of Round Rock, Texas, Bob and Maria Rollins of Carrollton, Texas, Richard Rollins of Menlo Park, California and by seven grandchildren Chris Rollins of Austin, Texas, Karen Rollins Hull of Fenton, Missouri, Andrew Rollins and Kate Rollins of Round Rock, Texas, Corey Rollins and Kelly Rollins of Carrollton, Texas and Hilary Rollins of Menlo Park, California and by three sisters. He was granted a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering by Texas A&M University in 1942. He served in the U.S. Army Air Force from 1942 to 1946 as an engineering officer and pilot in Iran and Italy. From 1947 to 1951, he was employed by Hughes Tool Company in Houston, Texas. In 1951 he was one of the founders of Drilco Oil Tools, Inc. in Midland, Texas and served as Vice President for Engineering and Manufacturing until Drilco merged with Smith International, Inc. in 1967. From 1968 to 1972 he was an instructor in the Department of Finance at the University of Texas at Austin while completing a Ph.D. degree in Business Administration. From 1973 to 1979 Dr. Rollins was a Lecturer in the University of Texas Department of Finance, teaching in the field of Corporation Finance for graduate and undergraduate classes and for executives in management development programs. He was reappointed a Senior Lecturer in Finance at the Graduate School of Business at the University of Texas at Austin in 1983 and taught at U.T. as an adjunct faculty member in 1989 and 1990. In 1979, Dr. Rollins was appointed by Governor Clements to the Public Utility Commission of Texas and served as Chairman of the Commission from February 1982 to March 1983. From 1983 to 1991 he was a founder and principal analyst in FINANCO, Inc., a firm engaged in financial analysis consulting, in public utility regulatory matters, and in litigation support. In November 1986, Dr. Rollins was appointed by the Federal Home Loan Bank Board to serve as Chairman of the Board of Gulf Federal Savings & Loan in New Orleans, Louisiana which was under the management consignment program of the FHLB. This assignment was completed in December 1987 when Gulf Federal Savings & Loan was merged into Pelican Savings Association of New Orleans. From 1987 to 1998, Dr. Rollins served on the Board of Directors of Smith International, Inc. a NYSE firm engaged in manufacture, sales and service of oil field and mining equipment on a worldwide basis. In 1987 and 1988, Dr. Rollins served as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Smith International, Inc. In 1989, Dr. Rollins was appointed by Governor Clements to be chairman of a Task Force on Public Utility Regulation. Rollins authored a number of papers published in the journals of the oil well drilling industry and of the public utility industry. Rollins has served as an elder in Presbyterian churches in Midland and in Covenant Presbyterian Church in Austin. Dr. Rollins served as a Trustee for Schreiner College in Kerrville, Texas and as a Trustee and Vice-Chairman of the Board of the Texas Presbyterian Foundation in Dallas, Texas. He also served as President of the Austin Community Foundation and served on the Boards of Directors of the Austin Symphony Orchestra, the Headliners Club of Austin, and for various banks and corporations. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 30th at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home. Graveside services will be at 10:15 a.m. on Monday, January 31st at Austin Memorial Park followed by a Memorial Service at 11:00 a.m. at Covenant Presbyterian Church, 3003 Northland Dr. in Austin.
