Hazel Brackston Batey Forester, daughter of Robert Brackston Batey and wife, Gertrude Josephine Miller, was born October 1, 1915 on the Batey Ranch in Guadalupe and Gonzales Counties and died on November 16, 2014.
She is preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, Capt. Russell E. Forester, USNR; sisters, Lyndal Patillo and Adeliene Owings and her brother, Wendell Brackston Batey.
She is survived by daughter, Suzanne Stein and husband, Larry Stein; daughter, Janie Hunt and husband, Jerry Mike Hunt. She also is survived by her four grandchildren, Russell P Stein and wife, Jennifer; Travis Forester Stein and wife, Megan; Brackston Clay Hunt and wife, Lahni; and Betsy Hunt Mutchler and husband, Dave and her three great grandchildren, Hazel Blossom and Harvey Brackston Hunt and Henry Forester Stein; special cousin, Andy Batey, his wife, Gracie and their immediate family. In addition she is survived by a number of nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends, all of whom she held dear.
Hazel began teaching in Austin Public Schools in 1942 and retired as an elementary supervisor in the mid 70's.
She was a member of many organizations, Delta Kappa Gamma, Austin Retired Teachers, Daughters of the Nile, Austin Women's Federation, and numerous other education, philanthropic, civic and social organizations.
The camaraderie the immediate family and friends shared brought great pleasure to her and her husband. The Foresters traveled in all 50 states and on all continents. She especially enjoyed visits to many Greek and Caribbean Islands, participating in the Ben Hur Travel Club, the Lunch Bunch, playing bridge, reading, sewing, gourmet cooking, and playing Bingo at The Continental Retirement Community. She lived and practiced the philosophy, "God helps those who help themselves; therefore, only your best is good enough. Go the extra mile" and "Always accept God's directions and wills".
Visitation hours will be from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 19, 2014 at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home, North Lamar location. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 20th in the Weed-Corley-Fish Chapel. A private family burial will be held at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio.
