Born in Knoxville, Tennessee, Ernie was known for his faithful, kind, and generous spirit. With a servant’s heart, he put family first, living each day with diligence and purpose. A loving husband to Elizabeth Ann Woodby, whom he married on July 21, 1957, Ernie cherished their life together. In Ann’s words, “I fell in love with a butcher, married a milkman, and lived with an FBI agent for 67 years—all the same man—Mr. Ernie Woodby.” This beautiful sentiment captures the essence of a man who was multifaceted, yet consistently devoted.
Ernie's historic career with the FBI spanned several decades and was marked by notable achievements and respected service. He began as a clerk in J. Edgar Hoover’s office, and his dedication propelled him to the FBI Academy at Quantico after completing his college education. Throughout his career, he was stationed in various cities, including Washington, D.C., Pittsburgh, New Castle, San Francisco, and Detroit, culminating in his role as Special Agent in Charge for Wisconsin, while based in Milwaukee. He played a significant role in the Bureau's budgeting process and had the honor of presenting the annual budget to Congress alongside the Director, a testament to his professional integrity and expertise.
Beyond his impressive career, Ernie was deeply passionate about his faith and his church community. He led a Sunday School class, sharing his knowledge and love of the Lord with others. Sports also played a significant role in his life; he loved cheering for the Baylor Bears and enjoyed playing basketball with fellow agents, valuing the camaraderie that came with the game.
Ernie is survived by his beloved wife, Ann; four sons, Tom (Marti), Greg (Amy), Scott (Robin), and David (Kim); sisters Shirley Blake and Anne Folsom Smith (Frank), both from Sarasota, FL and brother David Woodby (Dot) of Knoxville, TN, and a legacy of grandchildren: Grant, Hope, Whitney, Alex, Julia, Tyler, Emily, Tanner, Sarah, and Taylr, as well as great-grandchildren Aidan, Will, Birdie, Luke, Trevor, Davis, and Hallie.
As we celebrate Ernie’s life, we remember a man of faith, dedication, and love. His spirit will forever resonate in the hearts of those he touched.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to Great Hills Baptist Church, The Women of Pader, Gideon’s International or Boys Town.
A celebration of life for Ernie will be held Saturday, October 5, 2024 at 4:00 PM at Great Hills Baptist Church in the Worship Center, 10500 Jollyville Rd, Austin, TX 78759.
