Gilbert Capelo Velasquez

Gilbert was called by our Heavenly Father on June 9, 2017. He was born in Lockhart, Texas on April 14, 1932 to Leonardo and Benita Velasquez.

He was drafted into the U.S. Army at the age of 18. Gilbert proudly served his country during the Korean Conflict and was awarded numerous medals including the bronze star. After his military service he was employed by H.E.B. Grocery Company, and later joined the Texas National Guard.

Gilbert enjoyed the outdoors and could be found fishing, swimming at Deep Eddy or Lake Austin, or playing softball and enjoyed spending time with his dogs.

He was a member of St. Louis Catholic Church in Austin, and a life member of Catholic War Veterans, Post 1805 and life member of VFW 8787.

Gilbert was preceded in death by his parents, Leonardo and Benita Velasquez; his sisters, Corina Yanez, Dora, Ofelia and Jesusita Velasquez; and brother, Joe Velasquez.

Gilbert is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Martina; daughters, Diane and Gloria Velasquez; granddaughter, Modesta and her father John Gonzales; brothers, Antonio (Enidena), Guadalupe (Stella), and Abel (Ana); sisters, Mary Helen (Luis) Martinez and Rosemary (John) Mendez; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The Velasquez family wishes to thank the staff at Texas Oncology and Hospice Austin for their support, guidance and sensitivity during this emotional time. During this challenging time, our family could not have summoned the strength to face each and every day without their valuable assistance.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, June 14, 2017 at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home, 3125 North Lamar with Recitation of the Holy Rosary to be recited at 7:00 p.m.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, June 15, 2017 at St Louis Catholic Church, 7601 Burnet Road. Interment will follow at Assumption Cemetery at 3650 S. IH-35 in Austin.

Pallbearers: Ernest Yanez, Andrew Velasquez, Michael Velasquez, Phillip Velasquez, John David Mendez and John Gonzales. Honorary Pallbearers: members of the Catholic War Veterans.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to American Cancer Society, Alzheimer's Association or the charity of your choice.
