George Owen Slaughter, born in Austin July 5, 1918, died peacefully at his ranch on August 4, 2004. He is survived by his wife of 63 years Hallie Groos Slaughter, daughter Hallie S. Casey and her husband S. Tim Casey, son Richard G. Slaughter, daughter Elisabeth S. Mooney and her husband Jerry Mooney, seven grandchildren and two great-granddaughters. He was preceded in death by his son, George O. Slaughter, Jr. A graduate of Stephen F. Austin High School at age 15, he completed his Bachelors and Masters degrees at the University of Texas at age 21. He served in the U. S. Navy in the Pacific during World War II. George spent his entire career in family businesses, Slaughter Stores and Slaughters Meat Co. He served the community with many years of service to the Austin-Travis County Livestock Show and Rodeo as a Director and served as its President. He served his faith through active participation in Good Shepherd Episcopal Church as a Sunday school teacher, with terms on the vestry, as a delegate to the Diocesan Council, and as an animal wrangler. He also served three terms as Senior Warden of Good Shepherd. Many of his experiences were shared through his leadership as Scoutmaster of Troop 21 of the Boy Scouts. He enjoyed many years of active volunteerism and camaraderie with the Downtown Kiwanis Club, Town and Gown, the Headliners Club and Tarry House. He will be remembered for his wit, poetry and his love and kindness that he showed each of us. Pallbearers will be George Owen Slaughter III, Mark Richard Slaughter, Christopher Daniel Casey, David Slaughter Casey, Richard Groos Slaughter Jr., Robert Harrison Slaughter, Joseph David Slaughter and Ernest M. Groos IV. Services will be held in the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd at 2:00PM on Friday, August 6th. Private interment will follow.
