Frederick Pape

Fred grew up in Chicago's Rogers Park neighborhood and graduated from Loyola Academy and Loyola University of Chicago. Majoring in philosophy, he graduated in 1949. He married Geraldine Margaret Guokas on September 11, 1954. They met while he was stationed at Ellington Air Force Base in Houston, and they raised their family in Houston for 27 years. He was a 1st Lieutenant in the Air Force, serving as a navigator/bombardier during the Korean War. Fred had a long career as a group insurance statistician with American General Life Insurance Company in Houston and later in the Dallas area. He retired in September 1993, and he and Gerrie moved to Fredericksburg, where they lived for the next 20 years. They moved to Austin in September 2013 to be closer to family.

Fred was involved in the Ex-Military Flyers Club, Fredericksburg, Texas. He volunteered at Houston Youth Soccer Association as a referee, as a Boy Scout leader, and as a lector at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Fredericksburg. He was a faithful member of St. Louis of France Catholic Church and in his free time he enjoyed astronomy, football, soccer, math, science, fishing, hiking, and camping.

Predeceased by: parents Paul Robert Pape and Elizabeth Florence Massmann Pape; brother Paul Robert "Bob" Pape Jr. and his wife Dolores Frances "Lorrie" Olker Pape; sister Elizabeth M. "Betty" Pape Streff and her husband Frank James "Bud" Streff; sister Rose Mary "Moe" Pape Dietz and her husband Ronald Joseph "Ron" Dietz; brother-in-law James Edward "Jim" Hedger; and nieces Rosemary Jean Streff Grandusky and Karen Jean Stuckert Hedger.

Survivors, besides his wife, are children Amanda Pape and husband Mark Gresham of Granbury, Texas; Karen Pape of Houston, Texas; Mark Pape of Austin, Texas; Brian Pape and wife Paige Frederick-Pape of Austin, Texas; and Mary Pape of Austin, Texas; grandchildren Eric Bolme, Diane Bolme, Nick Pape, Addie Pape, Noah Pape, Chase Engel and wife Aly Sanguily; great-granddaughter June Harlow Grace Engel; sister Marilyn Pape Hedger; sister-in-law Sister Jean Marie Guokas, and many nieces, nephews, and their children."

Special thanks to Dee Robinson and Alexis Enriquez for their assistance to Fred in the care of his wife, and to the staff and fourth floor nurses of Seton Northwest Hospital, especially Christy, Jennifer, and Franny.

Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family from 5:00-8:00 PM, on Monday, the 13th of November 2017, at Cook-Walden Funeral Home, 6100 North Lamar Boulevard, Austin, Texas. A Rosary will be recited at 7:00 PM that evening.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 1:30 PM on Tuesday, the 14th of November 2017, at St. Louis King of France Catholic Church, 7601 Burnet Road, Austin, TX 78757.
