Freddie Iris McLarry Rash-Whitehead died peacefully on February 16, at age 94. Freddie was born to Bert and Jessie McLarry of Sulphur Springs, Texas on November 3, 1919 and attended Sulphur Springs High School and East Texas State Teacher’s College, now Texas A&M University at Commerce. Following a short romance, she married her first love, Ralph Ray Rash, and they had five children, all of whom survive her: James Larry Rash (Billie Mae), John Edward Rash (Karin), Stephen Ray Rash (Maggie), Ralph Allen Rash (Gail), and Anna Kathleen Thompson (Larry), nine grandchildren and ten great-children.
Freddie was a loving wife, mother and grandmother and enjoyed a full, devoted, and grace-filled life with Ralph for 64 years until his death in 2004. As with so many their age, the Great Depression and World War II shaped their lives and their characters. In addition to rearing five spirited children, she was a long-time Sunday School teacher at Hyde Park Baptist Church, Austin, Texas, where she and Ralph were lay leaders.
Late in life, she met and married the second love of her life, James B. Whitehead, on December 1, 2007. He was a widower who was married to his first love, Marjorie, for 55 years. Like Freddie, he had five children and a common bond to them was family. Though their marriage was short in years, Jim and Freddie cherished every moment of their lives together.
Freddie’s children and their spouses love and honor Jim and are blessed to be a part of his life.
