Our beloved mother, Dorothy Cloud Norwood, passed away peacefully on Wednesday evening, January 6, 2016. She was preceded in death by her husband, Gerald V. Norwood; brother, Weldon Cloud; and parents Carl and Lelia Cloud. She is survived by two children - Kathy Norwood Rushing and David Norwood; four grandsons - Joel Norwood, Thomas, Travis, and Tyler Pardue; step-granddaughter, Jessica Devine; and sister-in-law, Jean Wykes. She is also survived by four precious great grandchildren - Deuxie, Dalton, Charlee and Ava Grace. Dorothy was born on December 10,1923, in Lampasas Texas. After receiving her secondary school education there, she attended Abilene Christian College and then transferred to the University of Texas in Austin where she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree. Within a week of graduating from UT, she began working at KTBC radio and later KTBC television station. After leaving television and radio, she began a career as a media buyer for The Davis Group. She retired from that successful career in 2008 at the age of 84. Our mother enjoyed several hobbies. She earned a pilot's license while she attended The University of Texas. She was a top amateur golfer in the city of Austin league for many years. Our mother's family loved to go boating on Lake Austin. She and our father had the notoriety of having taught the famous author John Steinbeck how to water ski.
Most importantly, she was a faithful servant of our Lord Jesus Christ. She was a member of the University Avenue Church of Christ for 70 years (since 1946). She had the gift of Hospitality. There was never a stranger at her door. All were welcome, invited in, and well fed! She lived our Lord's teaching from Matthew 25 to feed the hungry, clothe the naked, and care for the sick.
She will be greatly missed, but great is her reward in heaven.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Dorothy’s name to University Avenue Church of Christ Rental Assistance Program.
