He grew up in Oxford Junction during the depression and was the youngest of nine children. He was a hard working young teenager and had as many as four jobs at a time. Donald delivered papers, drove cattle, delivered milk, stoked stoves, shoveled snow, packed chicken and did combining on the farm.
He graduated valedictorian of his high school class and joined the military at age 17 in 1941, serving during WWII, Korean Conflict, and Vietnam. He retired as a Lieutenant Colonel after serving 29 years in the U.S. Air Force in 1970. He received his bachelor’s degree from SMU in 1949, and his master’s degree from George Washington University in 1966.
He married Mildred Haydon Wilkes on January 12, 1982. They loved to travel, taking 24 trips to Hawaii. They would spend half of their time in Austin and the other half at his farm in Tonganoxie, Kansas where he served as president of the Kiwanis Club, and a long-time member of the American Legion and V.F.W. He enjoyed golf, fishing, and hunting.
He is preceded in death by his parents, seven siblings, and his first wife, Margaret. He is survived by his brother, Warren MacGregor of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; special niece Joyce Gearhart (who is taking care of Warren); step-daughter Diane Crawford; along with many MacGregor and Haydon relatives.
The family would like to give special thanks to Dr. Matthew Brimberry for his loving care, neighbors Gayle Goff and Linda Land, and New Century Hospice, and Riverside Nursing Center.
