Don Lloyd, a 3rd generation Austinite and beloved son, father, grandfather, and great grandfather who loved Texas Longhorn football as well as waving at boaters from his summer lake house dock, died peacefully in his sleep on Thursday November 29th with his wife of 72 years, Geraldine, by his side. He was 90.
Born on December 13, 1927 to Walter and Louise Lloyd, Don was the youngest of five children. Don was preceded in death by his brothers Dan and Louis and his sisters Mary Louise and Marjorie. Don grew up in Austin and graduated from Austin High School. Before attending Austin High, Don had already started selling papers for the Austin American Statesman and shortly after graduating became one of only two independent commercial distributors for the paper for over 30 years. After his stint with the Statesman, he then began work as an agent for the Dick Matz real estate firm. While working for Dick Matz, Don came upon an opportunity to own and run an automobile service station on North Lamar Boulevard. After 10 years at the station, Don retired but continued to work as an assistant moving portable buildings for his sons, Donnie and Jerry.
For over 50 years, Don was a passionate Texas Longhorn football season ticket holder and enjoyed attending games with his wife. As a familiar face at Memorial Stadium during the fall and attending other various events on the 40 Acres, he became friends with several Texas football coaches including Head Coach Darrell Royal, Coach Willie Zapalac, Coach Mike Campbell, and Coach David McWilliams. He enjoyed hunting trips with these coaches along with ex-Longhorn team players and long-time friend Ed Padgett. On these hunting trips, he also loved bringing his sons and when they were old enough, he also invited his grandsons.
Don's affection for Lake Austin began as a child when his parents would annually rent cabins on the lake. In keeping with this summertime tradition, Don rented cabins for his own family by Lake Austin up until the year 1970 when he decided to purchase a lakeside home. For over 40 years, during spring and summer, the lake house was the center of family activity on weekends and holidays.
One of Don's noted achievements was as an original founding member of the Austin Water Ski Club. As a member he was instrumental in organizing local ski tournaments along with being actively involved in coordinating ski shows for Austin Aqua Fest.
Don Lloyd is survived by his wife, Geraldine; daughter, Linda; 2 sons Billy and Jerry; grandchildren, Monica Munoz and her husband, Danny, Billy Garcia, Chris Heeney and her husband Sean, Mike Lloyd, Maggie Lloyd, Keith Lloyd and his wife Maura, Ryan Lloyd and his wife Sara, Rita Botto and her husband Mike, Andrea Maceyra and her husband Bill, Eric Lloyd and his wife Kristen; and great-grandchildren, Zane, Zachary, Emma, Jack, Peyton, Jake, Katie, Gracie, Alex, Avery, Allie, Nick, Hannah, Milo, and #15 to arrive in Spring 2019.
