He was born August 26, 1930, in Brady, Texas, to Herman and Myrtle Dacus. Donald was the youngest sibling to brother, Floyd Lee and sister, Florice. As a child he enjoyed spending time outside with his beloved dog, “Red.” He graduated from Brady High School in 1947; where he played football, and met his lifelong best friends, Charlie Taylor and Jack Gary. He went on to serve in the United States Navy from 1947 until 1951. He was stationed in California and Hawaii and spent time at sea during the Korean War on a minesweeper. Donald worked for 16 years as a Budget Analyst for Goodfellow Air Force Base in San Angelo, Texas, and for 14 years as a Civilian Budget Officer at Bergstrom Air Force Base in Austin, Texas. He retired in 1985, and occupied his time enjoying the outdoors, gardening and building a stone patio at his home.
Donald married Kay Karolyn Saunders Dacus on April 29, 1971, and they took many vacations tropical places like Hawaii, Jamaica, Mexico and the Bahamas, where Donald could enjoy exploring the beaches and rivers. Donald and Kay spent many evenings dancing together and visiting with friends, especially at Don’s Depot in downtown Austin. He also enjoyed playing tennis, swimming and water skiing, taking walks, riding bikes, and watching football games on television. He had many dogs throughout the years, but most of all he loved his childhood dog “Red.”
