Charles H. Huff passed away peacefully on August 19th, 2012 at 80 years of age. His wife, Bobbie L. Huff, of 58 years was with him when he passed away at St. David’s Hospital. The youngest of eight children, Charles was born May 3rd, 1932 in Grapeland, TX to Eugene and Lorena Huff. Graduating from Grapeland High School in 1949, Charles was the President of his class and was an active participant of the debate team. It was during these very early years that Charles began to fine-tune his skills as a speaker and writer. Charles continued his education at Texas A&M University and went on to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Agricultural Education in 1954.
Upon graduating from A&M, Charles began his professional career as a county agent in Carthage, TX. He eventually joined Texas Farm Bureau as Legislative Director in 1962. He eventually moved to Austin Texas and became the Executive Director of the Texas Veterinary Medical Association (TVMA). During his tenure he passed many bills and pieces of legislation including the creation of the Texas Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory as well as actively pursuing legislation to establish horse racing in Texas. He was also the creator and editor of the Texas Veterinary Medical Journal.
Later in his career, he represented several different associations including the Industrial foundation of America, Texas Right to Work Committee, Associated Milk Producers and Texas Motor Transportation Association. He eventually formed his own company Capital Surety Bond and created the Texas Notary Public Association beginning in the late 80s until his retirement in early 2012.
Throughout his lifetime Charles demonstrated his leaderships skills including representing the Texas A&M Class of 54 for 10 years, President of the Texas Society of Association Executives, President of the Local Neighborhood Association of West Austin and President of the West Austin YMCA. He was an active member of the Texas Agricultural Council, Texas Society of Association Executives, Association of Former Students, Texas A&M Century Club, 12th Man Foundation and held several Sul Ross Scholarships and sponsored a Diamond Endowed scholarship at Texas A&M University. He was also a supportive member of Tarrytown United Methodist church since 1962.
One of his proudest moments was the presentation of House Resolution 930 and Speakers Gavel honoring him for more than three decades at the State Capital on “Issues of Great Importance to the State of Texas”, in celebration of his 70th birthday.
His beloved son, James Robert Huff, preceded Charles in death. He leaves behind, his wife Bobbie, son, Jason Charles Huff of Bryan, College Station, TX, Luann Becker of Baltimore, MD, Dixie Lucey and husband Ron of Austin, TX, and four grandchildren, Mary Katherine, Will and Thomas Lucey and Tucker Hill Huff.
A visitation will take place from 6 o’clock until 8 o’clock in the evening, Thursday the 23rd of August at Cook Walden Funeral Home, 6100 North Lamar Blvd. Funeral Services will be held Friday, the 24th of August at 11 o’clock in the morning at the Cook Walden Colonial Chapel, 6100 North Lamar Blvd. Interment will follow at Cook Walden - Capital Parks Cemetery, Pflugerville, TX.
Charles will be remembered for his love of family, his work for the great state of Texas and his admiration and respect for the school he loved so well, Texas A&M University.
