Brian was born on September 14, 1969, in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. He is survived by his daughter Stella Wilson, his fiancé Melanie Derr-Johnson, Melanie’s children Harper and Lunden, Brian’s parents Rand and Char Wilson, his sister Ann Rodenbeck and brother-in-law Ryan Rodenbeck, his niece Emily Rodenbeck, his nephew Bennett Rodenbeck, former spouse Zana Wilson and her family, and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.
Brian graduated from Washington Senior High School in Sioux Falls in 1988 before obtaining a business degree at the University of South Dakota in 1992. Brian also pledged Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity in 1988.
After graduation, Brian was recruited by Paul Stork to work for Mattress Firm. He made the journey from South Dakota to Houston, Texas where he began his long-standing career in the mattress industry.
His co-workers and peers were really more of an extended family, and they all loved spending time together.
Brian was an entrepreneur who started several ventures after his tenure at Mattress Firm. Mattress Pro was created by Philip Busker and Brian, which was eventually purchased and folded back into the Mattress Firm Family of Brands. He and Philip also ventured into the frozen yogurt industry, creating a company called “It’s About Yogurt”. Their desire for that industry melted quickly and focus returned to the mattress industry. Two other companies would be created over the years including Mattress People and UltiMattress.
Brian was a man of many interests. He enjoyed cooking, entertaining, boating, fishing, photography, traveling and making people laugh. However, his greatest joy came from spending time with his daughter, Stella, and his family.
Brian had a heart of gold and had a solid relationship with God. His faith was a source of strength during times of both joy and tribulation.
He will always be remembered for his contagious laugh, wit, and ability to bring humor into almost every situation. He treasured his friends and family and made everyone around him feel important and cared for. He was fiercely loyal, and made friends for life. He was innately a provider, and would never deprive anyone that was in need. His departure has left a void that cannot be filled or replaced.
