Betty Jo DuBois Mittag was born July 10, 1928 in Newby, Texas (Leon County). She was born premature, weighing just a couple of pounds, so she spent several weeks in a shoebox in an open oven - that being the NICU of the day. Perhaps because she had such a challenging entry into the world, Betty seemed to treasure each day of life. She had a dry wit that made everyone laugh and smile. She had such compassion that helped many people make their way through life’s difficulties.
Betty and Otto Mittag, her husband of 65 years, established Master Valet Cleaners and the Orange Bull on the UT drag. UT grads of a certain age will fondly remember this venue.
Betty and Otto purchased a home in Rockport in 1984 and eventually retired there. Following Otto’s death in 2014, “Mimi” as she was fondly known by so many, continued to live there until Hurricane Harvey moved her out. She then moved to Brookdale Westlake in Austin.
She flourished at Brookdale; and then here came Covid. It took a toll on her, as with so many elderly.
She passed on May 30th, 2021 after a severe heart attack.
Betty “Mimi” is survived by her daughter, Kathy and Ted Gray; son, Malcom and Christy Mittag; grandchildren, Jessica and Steven Bassett, Mark and Ashley Dameron, and Greg Dameron; Jennifer and Jason Camp and Megan and Seth Stewart; and great grandchildren, Caroline and Emma (Jo) Bassett, Andrew Camp, and Townes and Levi Stewart. Also surviving is her brother, Sam DuBois and his wife Gene.
Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 5th at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home, 3125 N. Lamar. Interment will follow at 11:30 a.m. at Oakwood Cemetery Annex, 1600 Comal.
