Anthony 'Tony' George Benner

Tony Benner passed away on September 11, 2015 at home surrounded by his adoring family, due to complications from pancreatic cancer. He was born on November 28, 1945 to George and Edna Benner on the family farm outside of Fowler, Indiana. He was the sixth of 14 children.

He graduated from Freeland Park High School in 1963. He later enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1964 and proudly served his country until 1975, including one tour in VietNam and one in Germany. On May 31, 1969 he married the love of his life, Sandy McCauley, after a whirlwind courtship in San Angelo Texas. After leaving the Air Force in 1975, his family moved to Austin Texas where he lived and worked until in death. While helping to raise his five daughters and working, he attended college at Park University from which graduated from in 1993.

He is survived by his loving wife of 46 years Sandra (Sandy) Benner, daughters Beth and husband Jeff Bryars, Shawn and husband Charlie Brents, Nannette and husband Dale Anderson, Robin and husband Jeremy Sheard and Jocelyn Benner. He had 11 grandchildren, 10 grandsons and one granddaughter, Eddie and wife Faith, Anthony and Ian Brents, Andrew and Avery Bryars, Xavier, Micah and Ava Anderson and Hayden, Tristen and Masen Sheard. He was also awaiting the arrival of his first great grandchild. He is also survived by four brothers, six sisters, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents George and Edna Benner, In-Laws Lomax and Lois McCauley, brothers Richard (Dick) Benner, Charles (Charlie) Benner and Edward Benner and two nephews.

Visitation and Rosary will be held at Cook Walden Funeral Home on North Lamar, Austin, Texas on Tuesday, September 15, 2015 starting at 6:00 pm. The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1:30 pm on Wednesday, September 16, 2015 at St. Louis King of France Catholic Church, Austin, Texas. Burial with Military Honors will be held at 1:00 pm Thursday, September 17, 2015 at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio, Texas. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his name to a pancreatic cancer research fund of your choice.

We would like to thank the many friends and family who have shown their love and support over the last two years. We would also like to thank Hospice Austin for taking wonderful care of our “Superman”. He will be greatly missed.
