Annette Fulton Haslund, 85, died November 7, 2012 after a brief illness. She was the only child of Col. Alan and Katherine Johnson Fulton, and was born in 1927 in Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia. As an Army brat she traveled extensively. When her father was stationed in Germany after WWII she led groups of German Girl Scouts and hosted a radio program telling fairy stories and Greek myths for the American Forces Network.
Annette graduated with high honors from the University of Texas at Austin in 1950 with a degree in Education with an emphasis in Special Education and later a Master's degree in Education from SMU. While in a University of Texas history class she met and fell in love with Tom Haslund, the light of her life. They married in December 1950 and enjoyed 44 years of happiness together. Annette taught school while Tom studied and practiced medicine. They eventually settled in Austin to raise their three daughters.
Although she lost most of her vision to macular degeneration at age 11, Annette loved education, the arts, and current events. She was active in AAUW, many book discussion groups, the LBJ Library lecture series, and Lifetime Learning continuing education programs. She was devoted to Trinity Presbyterian Church which merged and became Genesis Presbyterian Church. Annette was a relentless champion of Reach Out and Read (now Bookspring) and Trinity Child Development Center Preschool in Austin.
Annette was preceded in death by her husband, Tom. She is survived by Karen Haslund and sons Alan and David Johnson of Austin, Ingrid and husband Jim Keller and sons Sam and Matt Keller of Ft. Worth, and Helen and husband Ben Daniel and daughters Aubree and Caylee Daniel of Santa Barbara.
A celebration of Annette's life will be held at Genesis Presbyterian Church, 1507 Wilshire Blvd., on Saturday, November 10, 2012 at 4:30 p.m.
