With much heartbreak we announce that Betty passed away at home in Newmarket in the comfort of her true love, her husband Bill, to whom she was married for 66 adventurous years. Together they traveled to many of the states in the U.S., but she loved Las Vegas the most (with all you can eat crab legs and shrimp buffets). They also traveled many times to visit cherished family in Northern Ireland and Scotland.
Betty was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland on April 2, 1938, to Agnes and Bobbie Allen as a younger sister to Tommy and eventually became older sister to Bob. In 1953 at the age of 12 Betty arrived in Canada with her Mum Agnes, and brothers to join her dad, Bobbie where they settled in Toronto.
In a time when entertainment was the local dance hall, Betty and Bill met – the story is Mum got Dad’s attention as she walked away, and yes, he watched. They fell in love and were married in April of 1957. Ann came first in late ’57, next Irene in mid-1959 and a whopping 10 years later in mid-1969 along came young Bobbie.
Betty’s superpower was planning parties, any kind of party but especially summer pool parties and the much-anticipated Christmas parties. Extra care was taken each year to plan out the menu and to come up with new ideas for desserts, and oh those desserts! Flans, whiskey shortbread, key lime pie, and those oh boy those Grand Marnier chocolate cups. These parties were always Mum’s love language.
Betty’s tenacity was especially needed for the past 8 years where life threw her a few curve balls. Betty’s strength, Irish grit, and most importantly the love and support of her husband Bill gave her what she needed to fight and thrive.
We cannot talk about Mum without mentioning her love of the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Toronto Blue Jays. Both teams caused her grief and celebration. If only the Leafs listened to her expert direction as she yelled at the TV. Oh, and let’s not forget anything by Elvis Presley!
Betty loved and is loved by her kids Ann, Irene, and Bob, her daughter-in-law Niki and her immensely loved grandkids, Ryan, and Devin. Betty has 2 brothers, Tommy, sister-in-law Sy and younger brother Bob and sister-in-law Marilyn. There are countless nieces and nephews as well as family and friends not only in Canada but also in Northern Ireland and Scotland.
Please join us as we take our turn to throw a party to celebrate Betty/Mum on Saturday, June 17th from 2-4pm at Thompson Funeral Home, 530 Industrial Parkway South, Aurora, ON L4G 6W8
In lieu of flowers we ask that donations be made to the Christian Horizons walk-a-thon for team “Belfast Betty”at https://belongathon.ca/t/belfastbetty.
