Leonard L Schmierer

Leonard Lee Schmierer, beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed away peacefully on October 24, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on December 20, 1943, in Sidney, Montana, the second of three sons to the late Bill and Frieda Schmierer, and was a devoted brother to Roger and Gordon.

Leonard’s life was marked by his deep commitment to family, faith, and friendship. His journey led him to meet his beloved wife, Joan Adelle Steele, at the Pentagon. Their romance blossomed through handwritten love notes he left for her during their courtship. They were married on April 26, 1969, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Hudson, Michigan. Their marriage of 55 years was built on a foundation of open communication and faith in one another, a true partnership cherished by all who knew them. Together, they built a beautiful home in the country and shared countless treasured moments, from hunting trips to campfire talks, weaving stories that their family and friends will hold dear forever.

Leonard was known for his meticulous attention to detail and his loyalty to those he loved. His close friends, Elias Huerta and Henry Quaile, shared his values, and their enduring friendships were a source of strength and joy throughout his life. Leonard’s daughters, Tina Lynn (Dilallo), Carri Leigh (Martin), and Holly Annette (Cotto), remember him as a hardworking, honest, and devoted father who always put family first. His grandchildren—Justin, Christopher, John, Larissa, Renee, Nicholas, and Gabriel—were his pride and joy, and he took every opportunity to express how much they meant to him.

Leonard served his country honorably in the United States Air Force as a Sergeant (E4). His diligence and knowledge of military operations led a ranking officer to select him as a Personal Assistant, a role he performed with distinction.

Leonard earned his bachelor’s degree in accounting and worked for Caterpillar Tractor Company. He was active in the company’s union, where he served as Secretary, and ultimately retired from Caterpillar with many years of dedicated service.

Throughout his life, Leonard was a man of deep faith, often saying, “prayers can be answered anywhere.” His legacy of devotion, kindness, and strength will live on in the hearts of those who loved him.

Leonard will be dearly missed, but his memory and love will continue to guide and inspire his family and friends.
