Hello Ryan and Michelle;
I loved you Dad! I had so many fun trips with him from driving all the way to Reno in 1970 or 1971 to fishing with him here in Alaska. He took me and my children to Seahawk games a few times also. He was a great guy and I will miss him a lot. I stopped by and saw him a year or so ago in Seven Bays and we went to the casino where he treated me to lunch. We talked about him coming up to Alaska soon. I will miss that trip with him. My families prayers are with you and your loss. One of Jake's old buddies, Ted Forsi

I had planned to attend Jakes services and the party afterwards but my mother is in the process of passing and I won't be able to be there. 

We were the best of buddies for over 50 years and these are some of the stories (I can't tell them all) that I would have told Ryan and Michelle if I could have been there. I know that he loved both of them and his grandchildren with all of his heart.

We went to high school and played football together. He was the left offensive tackle and I was the right tackle on the team that took the Spokane city championship in 1964. Our line coach was Mr. Arger, Arg as Jake would call him, and he liked every lineman but it was evident that he really took to Jake. Jake is the third that played on the line to pass away, there are only two of us left, and of the original eleven there are just six remaining.

We bonded and became lifetime friends. High school was lots of fun and he was a big part of it. He had a hot “57” Chevy that he and his dad modified the transmission by putting four on the floor and then he painted it a bold canary yellow. We spent countless hours riding around on 25 cent gas. Gas stations were having gas wars and I remember sitting in a line with him for what seems like hours to get to the pumps. They pumped if for you then and they weren't hurrying because they had a one hour sale at 4 cents a gallon. We were one of the lucky few that got it at that price. That was a big time score!

After graduation he went onto the University of Washington along with our other buddy, Pat Thomas. I joined the Army and went to Vietnam. He finished a year at the U and was drafted into the Army and went to Vietnam. I got out of the Army a little before he did. We reconnected and we both went to Eastern State College (but now it's a University) and shared an apartment in Cheney for the summer of 1969.
 
My mother loved Jake and just a couple of days ago she was telling the story of making a surprise visit (inspection) to our apartment. The kitchen was by the door leading out and as she was leaving she opened the dishwasher. Evidently she thought that it was unusual to find one filled with empty beer bottles!
 
Being the car guy that he was, he bought a brand new Malibu. Summer was dead in Cheney other than the swimming pool attracted lots of girls. So we would spend some time there but end up going to Spokane a lot in that new car. At the end of summer we rented an apartment in Spokane because we both worked and found that driving to Cheney after work didn't fit very well. At some point Pat showed up and we offered him the couch in the living room.

One time we were sitting around and I was talking about getting a date for the weekend when I called a girl that I just met. When I asked her out she told me that she didn't know what she was doing Friday night. When I hung up I had a few choice words to say to Jake and he commiserated with me about what a heartless woman she was. We have been married for 43 years.
 
Jake got word that he had been accepted by the FAA so he headed off for Air Traffic Controllers School in Oklahoma. When he graduated and went to work in Auburn he and Pat shared an apartment. They both had women that they were pursing and it was obvious that he and Nadine were going to get married.

From the early 70's until he retired and moved to Seven Bays we were raising our kids and working hard at our careers. Our relationship was reduced to occasional phone calls, short visits and Christmas cards. But he was still one of my best friends.

The move to Seven Bays allowed us to reconnect. I would drive over from Spokane and Pat would drive in from Snohomish and we would spend a few days having lots of fun. Fishing, lying and retelling stories from our youth. I will always treasure those times. He was witty, funny, smart, kind and loyal friend. Knowing him enriched my life.

Nadine's passing affected him deeply and he would often talk about her. He was very proud of his children. Ryan and Michelle, I am sorry for your pain but know that you will have wonderful and meaningful memories of your dad.

I could not have asked for a better brother-in-law.  Connie and I have so many great memories of times spent with Jake and Nadine, Ryan and Michelle.  Camping, boating, fishing,  family gatherings at their home in Auburn.  We will miss Jake, and that smile and twinkle in his eye that always welcomed you.

Ryan, Michelle and family,  We are so sorry for the loss of your dad.   Jake was a wonderful friend and great neighbor and we will miss him every day.

Uncle KEKE, that's what we called him. All my memories of Keith (we never called him Jake) were FUN. Keith was always gonna have fun. He was a great guy and made friends effortlessly. He will be missed by our family and the many

Jake was a great controller and was always full of sprit.  Working with him for the years up to the strike was a memorable time in my life.  As controllers we had a very tight friendship that only controllers can know. Especially the "Bolts" trips to Hawaii to see the occluded front. My prayers to his family, so sorry to hear of his passing on to another place.

I hope this photo of Jake comes through without a problem.  It was taken over in Hawaii in the late 1970's.  5 or 6 of us (controllers) would FAM over for 2 or 3 days of fun in the sun.  Jake was a prince of a guy and is missed.  I communicated with him within the last year and it was great getting reacquainted via email.  Long live the "Lightning Bolts"!

My career in the FAA only overlapped Jake's by a few years, but of course since my dad worked there too, our lives overlapped a lot longer.  

I remember a time as a young boy, out on Lake Tapps, with a couple of crews worth of controllers and families waterskiing and tubing.  

Jake must have spent an hour bobbing around in the water with me, trying to teach me how to "get up" on skis.  I never did get the hang of it, but he was the kind of guy who would do that with a friend and co-worker's kid, just because.

I'm sure he'll be missed greatly by his family and friends, just as I'm sure that we will all carry a little piece of him with us and that it's part of us.  Our lives leave impacts on everyone we connect with and Jake's impact was a good one.

Ryan & Michelle, We were sorry to hear about your Dads' passing, so sudden.  We will always remember when Jake spent some Christmas dinners with us before he moved away.  He was good at telling jokes and my Dad always had one to tell him back, they enjoyed each other. Your parents were taken too soon, but they left behind a wonderful legacy in their children.   I know your hearts are heavy with pain,always remember the good times that you had over at the lake and growing up.  Jake loved you both very much.  Words cannot take your grief away, always know that you are in our hearts and share in your sorrow.  Love you both.

I had the distinct pleasure of meeting Jake in August 2010 on a family vacation.  He welcomed us with open arms and a big ol' bear hug.  From there on we were hooked on spending our time away from work with him and his family for a few weeks during the summer.  My kids often referred to him as papa Jake so they could try to fit in like the grandkids.  He had natural way of making you feel comfortable and not to take life to serious.  I guess being retired and living in seven bays for several years can give you that perspective.
Jake was an amazing guy to sit down and have a conversation.  Each year we came to visit, our conversations would become more in depth ranging from sports, gambling, tv shows, family history lessons, childhood, meeting the love of his life, and his work as an FAA controller.  His eyes would light up and grin from ear to ear when he spoke about his two kids Ryan and Michelle.  He enjoyed reminiscing about his family vacations at lake Roosevelt, towing his kids and their friends behind the jetster from sun up to sun down, and loving every minute of it.  On several occasions he would comment on how proud he was of his kids and what they have endured and accomplished.
In knowing Jake for the short amount of time it became clear that he didn't know a stranger or have any enemies.  He was a true gentleman, and left way too soon.  I just wish that I could have one more interview Jake.  Lake Roosevelt will never be the same.

Ryan and Michelle,  I'm very sorry to hear of your father passing away last week. I knew he and your mom for many years. You guys were pretty young when I first met Jake and Nadine down at Keller. I will always remember the boating and camping around your parents. The visits to Keller are among my favorite memories, the lake and the cliffs behind and the mountains across the river on the reservation are magical. My mother told me of Denny and Jake and maybe Butch or one of the others down at the park by themselves and dropping in on her to visit and watch football after Dad was in the nursing home. It was good company for her. I'll remember the great gin and tonics that Jake would mix for me, and sitting around the picnic table with Nadine one night after you kids had eaten and cleaning up the leftovers on your plates. There was Ryan's plate and Michelle's plate that had quite a little bit for me to scavenge, and then there was a plate in between with nothing left. Who's plate is this Nadine, they cleaned it up? "That's Denise's plate, she smiled". "Oh those Ross kids will eat anything". I wish the best for both of you, and hope to see you both down at Keller sometime.  Danny Ostenberg.
