Lewiston - G. Raymond Hobart, 87, formerly of 13 Owens St., Lewiston, died Monday July 7, 2014 at St. Mary's d'Youville Pavilion where he resided for the past month. Born in Auburn, May 5, 1927, a son of the late George and Louise Brown Hobart, he graduated from Edward Little High School in 1945. He was married to the former Gloria Cole who died March 10, 2008. He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II and worked as manager in the tire retreading business for many years. Prior to his retirement, he also worked in real estate sales, for the United States Postal Service as a mail carrier, and as a courier. Ray enjoyed road trips, yard work, photography, music, gardening, and being with family. Our dad will be remembered for the love of his wife and family, strength of character, and determination as he struggled with illness. A quiet man who people were drawn to for his humor, inner fortitude, and wisdom, Ray accumulated a lifetime of enduring friendships. When prodded, reminiscences of past events and people were never too far removed to evoke a retelling to the delight of all. Tales of growing up on the farm in South Auburn surrounded by 6 younger siblings, riding on the troop train to Mississippi after high school graduation to begin basic training with hopes of becoming a pilot, pranks pulled on schoolmates and coworkers, and the story of the meeting of one special young lady at a local business who would become his wife of 60 years, were just some of these. He is survived by his daughter, Brenda L. Nolan and husband William of Auburn; two sons, Bruce D. Hobart and wife Ann of Mechanic Falls, Jeffrey M. Hobart and wife Patti of Derry, N.H.; six grandchildren, Jesse Hobart, April Jubett, Colby Hobart, Mark Nolan, Casey Ste. Croix, and Taylor Hobart; great-grandchildren Gabrielle Nolan, Jane Jubett, and Lucy, Luke, Maggie, and Molly Hobart; his sister, Carolyn Randall of Brunswick, brothers Gerald Hobart of Lisbon Falls, and William Hobart of Lake Placid, Florida. The family wishes to thank Dr. Seth Gordon for his wonderful care for many years as well as the staff of C2 at St. Mary's Regional Medical Center, the staff of St. Mary's Wound Center, and staff at D'Youville Pavilion Rehab.
