Lewis "Lew" Morse passed away on February 24, 2012 in Roseville, CA. He was born on July 21, 1918 in Indiana to Thomas Morse and Ruth Susie Lewis. Lew's family moved to Tucson AZ for his father's health, and then moved to Stockton, CA, where his father was a store clerk and mother was a school teacher. Lew began caddying at the Stockton Country Club in 1928, where his love for the game of golf began. He attended Stockton High School where he was a reporter for the school paper and played in the orchestra, graduating in 1936.
Lew joined the United States Army in May, 1942. After graduating from bombardier school he went to the Asian Pacific Theater in October, 1943, where he flew in sixty-eight combat missions with the 90th Bombardment Group (known as the Jolly Rogers). Lew was awarded the Asian Pacific Theater Ribbon with 5 Battle Stars, the Air Medal with 3 Oak Leaf Clusters, and the Philippine Liberation Ribbon. He returned to the United States in December, 1944 and was honorably discharged from the service in January, 1946.
On his return to the United States, Lew attended school at the College of the Pacific (present day University of the Pacific) in Stockton, California. While there, he continued his love for golf by starting the golf team for the college. Lew graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in June, 1947.
After graduation, Lew went to work for the California State Department of Transportation conducting right-of-way acquisitions. After 20 years, Lew transferred to the California Department of Water Resources, where he served for another 20 years in a similar capacity.
Lew was preceded in death by his wife Gertrude Morse. Lew and Gertrude lived in Rocklin, CA since 1964, and were longtime members of the Sunset Whitney Country Club. In addition to his love for golf, Lew enjoyed socializing and traveling.
Lew was laid to rest at the Sacramento Valley National Cemetery in Dixon, CA. Arrangements entrusted by Chapel of the Hills.
